Summary

The kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard occurred on June 10, 1991, when she was 11 years old. Dugard was abducted from a school bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California. She was missing for over 18 years. On August 26, 2009, Dugard, her daughters, and Phillip Craig Garrido appeared in the office of her alleged kidnapper's parole officer in California. • After enduring a terrifying life in captivity, Jaycee truly deserves a life filled with happiness and fulfillment. She possesses a remarkable talent for writing and captivating storytelling. What particularly impressed me was her approach to the sensitive topic of sexual abuse, describing it only once and subtly alluding to it later on. She expertly documented and narrated the disturbing aspects with great authenticity. Hats off to her! I sincerely hope she can pursue a writing career and perhaps explore the realm of fiction, as her personal experiences provide a wealth of material to draw from. Wishing you all the best in your new life, Jaycee!
  • I find it hard not to give this book a perfect rating because of the immense sympathy I feel for Jaycee. However, I believe that the book would have greatly benefited from better editing. The meandering cat journals seem to serve no purpose other than to fill pages needlessly. It's important to remember that the book is written by Jaycee, who only has a 5th grade education. This becomes apparent when listening to her narration, as her voice still sounds very childlike. In conclusion, let's set aside our sympathy and evaluate this memoir as we would any other novel. How would we rate it then?
  • Jaycee's own narration adds an extra punch to the overall impact of this memoir. Her personal insights throughout the book offer a deeper understanding of her state of mind during her captivity. If you're intrigued by the process of overcoming 18 years of psychological and sexual trauma, Jaycee's story will leave a lasting impression.
