Summary

For generations, the dragonriders had dedicated their lives to fighting Thread, the dreaded spores that periodically rained from the sky to ravage the land. On the backs of their magnificent telepathic dragons they flew to flame the deadly stuff out of the air before it could reach the planet's surface. But the greatest dream of the dragonriders was to find a way to eradicate Thread completely, so that never again would their beloved Pern be threatened with destruction. Now, for the first time, it looks as if that dream can come true. For when the people of Pern, led by Masterharper Robinton and F'lar and Lessa, Weyr-leader and Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr, excavate the ancient remains of the planet's original settlement, they uncover the colonists' voice-activated artificial intelligence system - which still functions. And the computer has incredible news for them: There is a chance - a good chance - that they can, at long last, annihilate Thread once and for all. "When McCaffrey's beloved dragons roar and their riders soar upon the beasts' mighty backs...fans of Pern will likely be enthralled." - Publishers Weekly

  • I wasn't a fan of the way Foster portrayed the male dragon riders as Pern's version of cowboys, and it would have been better if Fandarel had a much deeper voice like he was described in the books. However, all things considered, it's actually a decent narration.
  • I used to read McCaffrey's Pern books when I was younger and decided to revisit them recently. The storyline is fantastic, although it can feel a bit hurried at times. Regrettably, Foster fails to accurately portray the emotions in the dialogues as instructed. When characters are supposed to shriek, yell, exclaim, or speak rapidly, Foster reads their lines slowly and deliberately. It gives the impression that everyone sounds either simple-minded or intoxicated. It's incredibly disappointing to listen to characters who should be enthusiastic or upset being voiced in a manner that drains them of life. I will definitely make a point to avoid his narrations in the future.
  • The later books in this series, much like Game of Thrones, have a similar intertwining style, though they have less violence. Overall, it's a fantastic series. The chosen narrator for this audiobook has a voice that's pleasant to listen to, but his reading style can be bothersome at worst and diverting at best. Particularly during dialogue, he tends to read at an overly sluggish pace, as if there's a pause. Between. Every. Single. Word. It feels unnatural and interrupts the listener's immersion in the story because nobody actually speaks like that.
  • We absolutely loved this book. It's always been one of our top picks from the Pern series. It effectively ties all the different storylines together, resulting in a truly satisfying conclusion.
  • This book is an absolute gem and serves as a fitting conclusion to the expansive series of Pern. It's one of those reads that I can't get enough of, and I've been revisiting it for years. I just want to express my gratitude to Anne McCaffrey for her exceptional talent in crafting such a captivating piece of literature. Kudos!
