Summary

Raised by unconventional Irish Catholics who knew "how to drink, how to dance, how to talk, and how to stir up the devil," Kate Mulgrew grew up with poetry and drama in her bones. But in her mother, a would-be artist burdened by the endless arrival of new babies, young Kate saw the consequences of a dream deferred. Determined to pursue her own no matter the cost, at 18 she left her small Midwestern town for New York, where, studying with the legendary Stella Adler, she learned the lesson that would define her as an actress: "Use it," Adler told her. Whatever disappointment, pain, or anger life throws in your path, channel it into the work. It was a lesson she would need. At twenty-two, just as her career was taking off, she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Having already signed the adoption papers, she was allowed only a fleeting glimpse of her child. As her star continued to rise, her life became increasingly demanding and fulfilling, a whirlwind of passionate love affairs, life-saving friendships, and bone-crunching work. Through it all, Mulgrew remained haunted by the loss of her daughter, until, two decades later, she found the courage to face the past and step into the most challenging role of her life, both on and off screen. We know Kate Mulgrew for the strong women she's played--Captain Janeway on Star Trek; the tough-as-nails "Red" on Orange is the New Black. Now, we meet the most inspiring and memorable character of all: herself. By turns irreverent and soulful, laugh-out-loud funny and heart-piercingly sad, BORN WITH TEETH is the breathtaking memoir of a woman who dares to live life to the fullest, on her own terms.

  • I was totally digging this book for like 90% of the ride, but the ending had me scratching my head and feeling hella puzzled. Like, did she end up with her soulmate? Did she reunite with her daughter? And what happened to her mom and the whole Alzheimer's situation?
  • I didn't really know much about the author, besides her part in OITNB. I was just chilling one day and decided to listen to some snippets of new books, and I couldn't help but be curious to learn more. The author definitely has a knack for writing, and her rawness and genuineness really come across in this book. I think it's a story that's definitely worth giving a listen.
  • I think a lot of the positive reviews might have been influenced by people who are fans of the author's acting. The writing wasn't great; it was boring and filled with overused dialogue and descriptions. It's a shame because she had some interesting experiences that could have been written in a more skilled way. I was also surprised by how irritating her narration voice is. It could be partly due to poor editing because in the middle of many sentences, her voice's volume and tone would completely change, and that was quite distracting. Her narration was also overly dramatic, which made me roll my eyes internally. In my opinion, the four-and-a-half-star rating is misleading and more of a reflection of her popularity as an actor rather than her writing ability.
  • This memoir left me incredibly disappointed! I had high hopes for a compelling story about a strong and resilient female character navigating the challenges of life with authenticity, kindness, and bravery. However, I was completely taken aback by the author's overwhelming self-centeredness and grandiosity evident in every anecdote she shared. The author's self-absorption made it increasingly difficult for me to reach the end of the book. She carefully crafted her personal narrative to portray herself as either a helpless victim of circumstance or the hero of her seemingly perfect life. What bothered me even more was that it became evident that she strategically chose the most favorable angles to present her story, ensuring that she came across in the best possible light, disregarding the impact on others and solely focused on preserving her own image. Furthermore, it became clear that she calculated every move and significant decision in her life in a selfish manner, disregarding the feelings and needs of those around her. Other reviewers have referred to her as pathologically narcissistic, and sadly, I have to concur. Please excuse any errors in my English, as it is not my first language. I typically do not write reviews, but I felt compelled to share my thoughts, especially considering the overwhelming praise this book has received from other readers.
  • Wow, talk about someone who thinks highly of themselves! I couldn't agree more with what Colleen said in her review. She really hit the nail on the head when she described this memoir as shallow, self-centered, and completely lacking self-awareness. If you're into reading about a narcissistic actress and how she navigates through life, then this book might be just your cup of tea. However, I must say that there doesn't appear to be any genuine concern for others' emotions or their interactions. I do appreciate her talent as an actor, but I have a feeling I wouldn't care for her as a person.
  • This book is seriously awesome, giving us a glimpse into an extraordinary life. What's even cooler is that the author herself narrates it, and let me tell you, her delivery is absolutely spot-on.
  • Kate Mulgrew's book, 'Born with Teeth: A Memoir', was an absolute page-turner. The narrative had a seamless flow that captivated me from start to finish. I must admit, I felt a tinge of disappointment when the book concluded, simply because I couldn't get enough. As a fan of happy endings, I found myself particularly drawn to this memoir. Mulgrew skillfully explored various relatable life experiences, such as adoption and relationships, making the book truly engaging. I sincerely hope she continues to write both fiction and nonfiction, as she clearly has a talent for it.
  • Absolutely amazing!!!! I have zero complaints, I need more of this in my life soon! Totally worth every cent and then some! I appreciate the valuable life lessons, your resilience, inner radiance, and profound knowledge
  • This is hands down the best autobiography I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The author's writing style is so captivating that it feels more like a work of fiction than a true-life story. I must admit, I was completely hooked right from the very start.
