'Robert Clinch loved his boat more that anything else in the world ' more than his wife ' his kids ' his girlfiend ' Even more than the largemouth bass he was pursuing.' Thus begins a twisted tale of murder in the world of big-stakes bass fishing tournaments. Filled with exwives, evangelists, and an armed pit-bull, this is a story that could only be concocted by Carl Hiaasen, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, New York Times best-selling author, and czar of Florida noir fiction.

  • I just finished reading "Double Whammy" by Hiaasen, and I must say, it won't be my last. I absolutely adored this novel. The main characters were vibrant, believable, and really easy to root for. I found myself completely engrossed in the action and mystery, eagerly wanting to know what would happen next. But the icing on the cake was definitely the humor. It was irreverent, unexpected, and blended seamlessly with the darker elements of the story. The touch of romance was a delightful addition as well. And let's not forget the ending—it was simply fantastic. The narrator, Wilson, really nailed it. He effortlessly faded into the background, allowing the story to take center stage. I've already recommended this book to a couple of my friends, and I can't wait to dive into more of Hiaasen's work.
  • The narration was absolutely awful, making it impossible for me to fully immerse myself in the story. Every time I started to get into the plot, Mr. Wilson's constant swallowing would irritate me to the point where I couldn't focus anymore. I definitely won't be purchasing any more audiobooks narrated by George Wilson! It felt like I paid more to listen to the narrator's bodily functions rather than enjoying the actual story.
  • Being a huge fan of Hiaasen, I was eagerly looking forward to delving into "Double Whammy". However, it didn't quite captivate me in the same way as his other books, leaving my mind wandering at times. Nevertheless, Hiaasen's trademark humor and absurdity were still present in full force, with a delightfully eccentric ensemble of characters (fans of "Skinny Dip" will appreciate the origins of the "Captain"). Unfortunately, the fishing backdrop failed to hold my interest, and the narrator's performance was subpar. His constant swallowing and service breathing became so distracting that I found it impossible to listen when there was silence around me. I could only bear it in the midst of loud surroundings, like at the gym. It's disappointing to see that this same narrator is used for many of Hiaasen's books (don't they listen to themselves?). The narrator of "Skinny Dip" is far superior, in my opinion. Nonetheless, "Double Whammy" still delivers that classic Hiaasen dark humor, eliciting many laughs from me. For that reason, I would rate it 4 stars.
  • Is there a distinct culture in Florida? One that's so unique that it's like being on another planet, maybe Mars? Does this place serve as a battleground for conflicting ideas, where egos, dreams, and even bodies are crushed? The strange thing about this story is that it doesn't exactly have a clear ending. Well, at some point, the reader will say, "The End," so I suppose Hiaason decided that was the right moment to stop tugging on this particular thread. But you know what? I wished he kept on pulling. Hiaason is like a drug. Once you start indulging in his stories, it's addictive, and when it's over, you're left craving more. This peculiar and slightly twisted tale is incredibly entertaining. And the reason it all works so well is because you're so engrossed in the chaos and contradictions of Florida that you almost forget about reality. George Wilson's narration brings to life all the eccentric mysteries and wild creatures in a way that makes them seem as believable as the evening news. In fact, this might just be Florida's version of the evening news.
  • The story itself is solid, but the continuous interruptions from the narrator's service swallowing took away from the overall presentation. It would greatly improve if he could refrain from swallowing saliva every 10 seconds.
  • I was hoping it would improve. I thoroughly enjoyed Skinny Dip and heard fantastic reviews about 'Double Whammy'. I even saw Carl Hiaasen being interviewed on 60 minutes, so I thought it would be another enjoyable book to listen to. However, that was not the case. It started off decently, but... I managed to finish it somehow, but... if given the chance, I would have used my book credit on something else.
  • Carl Hassen isn't known for penning just decent novels; he crafts truly exceptional and hilarious thrillers. When it comes to bringing a Hassen novel to life, George Wilson is the ideal narrator. In "Double Whammy," the focus lies on the booming industry of high-stakes bass fishing competitions. Within this realm, deceit and trickery abound, but victory doesn't always come to the cheaters. This book offers a refreshing departure from the typically intense thrillers I devour.
  • I was really let down by how the book ended. Even though I can overlook certain things for the sake of the story, there were just too many unbelievable moments, particularly the scene in the ex-wife's bedroom with her husband right there. And don't even get me started on the part with Skink and the husband's dog. I've read other books by Hiaasen and liked them, but this one was too over the top for my taste.
  • I just finished reading "Double Whammy" by Carl Hiassan and I must say, it was quite the enjoyable read. As someone who hasn't explored Hiassan's works before, I was pleasantly surprised by the unique nature of this book. Despite not having any personal interest in fishing, I found the plot's clever use of Bass fishing as a backdrop to be intriguing. The characters that Hiassan introduces are a wild and eccentric bunch, including TV preachers, an ex-governor, and a whole host of southern stereotypes. They kept me engaged and entertained throughout the entire audio experience, with moments that had me both curious and laughing out loud. I can confidently recommend this book to others and I'm eagerly looking forward to diving into more of Hiassan's works in the future.
  • I've unintentionally stumbled upon some really memorable grumpy characters lately. And let me tell you, Skink is one of the most outrageous ones I've come across. I actually first encountered Skink in Hiassen's Skinny Dip, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Turns out, Double Whammy marks Skink's debut, and I couldn't be happier because he takes the spotlight here. We get to learn all about his past and watch him unleash chaos on the bad guys like nobody else can. I have to give a shoutout to the Daily Deal for pushing me to download this book. Initially, I wasn't too thrilled about a story centered around bass fishing, but boy, was I missing out on some serious fun. The supporting cast is entertaining, and while the mystery isn't mind-blowingly intricate, you just know that justice will prevail. Maybe not with the same dark humor as some of Hiassen's other works, but it's still a light and entertaining adventure.
  • I am a HUGE Carl Hiaasen fan and this book didn't disappoint. Great story, great cast of characters in a great setting. Narrator started out slow, but settled in and did a fine job. If you have never read/listened to CH, I highly recommend.
