  • This audiobook, 'How to Hang a Witch', tells a rather average and cliché tale of a group of witches, set in Salem with an old family rivalry at its core. There's nothing groundbreaking or captivating about it.
  • I stumbled upon 'How to Hang a Witch' by Adriana Mather by pure chance while looking for something to entertain myself during my drives and work sessions. I took a chance on it since there was a return guarantee, so why not, right? Let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised! This book has an intriguing storyline and the fact that Adriana Mather, the author, is also the narrator adds to the experience. We all know that the narrator can make or break an audiobook, and Mather does a splendid job. The book combines a bit of history with a well-told fictional story. The unexpected twist at the end caught me off guard, which is rare these days. The mystery had me engaged right from the start. The story follows Samantha as she moves from NYC to Salem, living with her Stepmom while her father is in the hospital. Right from the beginning, her classmates dislike her simply because of her last name. And things only get bumpier from there. There are the "Descendants," who are all related to the original players of the Salem witch trials, and Samantha finds herself on the wrong side of that family tree. There's also a grumpy ghost who doesn't want her in his house, a secret hidden study, and even a secret compartment in the wardrobe. I must admit, I wouldn't mind living in that house! But I won't give away any more spoilers; you'll have to read it yourself. My favorite part of the book is the author's connection to Salem. Adriana Mather is a 12th generation Mather, which is pretty awesome! I also loved her Author's note at the end where she passionately speaks about bullying. I hope her message resonates with at least a few readers as it could make a significant impact. If you enjoy stories about Salem and witches, you'll definitely love this one.
  • I'm really into the Salem witch trials, especially during November because of the connection to the Pilgrims and Puritans and their influence on the holiday. 'How to Hang a Witch' is the perfect witch story that I've been searching for! And what's even more awesome is that the author, Adriana Mather, is a descendant of the famous Cotton Mather. She even narrates the audiobook! Samantha Mather has always felt like a dark cloud has been following her throughout her life. Things take a turn for the worse when her father falls into a coma and needs to be moved from New York City to Boston. To be closer to him, she and her step-mother, Vivian, move into her dad's old house in Salem. Little does she know, she'll meet her cute neighbor, Jackson, and his mother who happened to be her dad's childhood best friend. She'll also come across a not-so-friendly ghost named Elijah who doesn't appreciate her meddling with his belongings. High school is brutal, but it's even worse when your last name is Mather at Salem High School. Samantha has to deal with rumors being spread about her by "the descendants," a clique of girls who are directly related to the women who were hanged during the witch trials. Luckily, she has Jackson by her side to help her navigate through it all, but she's not prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. She'll have to believe in the unbelievable, face betrayal, and overcome obstacles to set things right.
