  • G.C. This storyline wasn't really my cup of tea. I was a fan of Michelle's badassery, but Sean's dialogue didn't quite hit the mark for me this time. The humorous banter just didn't shine through. Ron did a commendable job as the narrator, but unfortunately, the material he had to work with fell short. On the bright side, the female narrator has definitely improved. I did catch a few episodes of the TV series and I must say, I loved the actor who portrayed Sean. Just a side note, I tried listening at the new 1.25x speed to match the author's intended pace. Overall, I won't be continuing with this series.
  • WARNING: This review contains spoilers! Can you believe that the motive for plotting to assassinate a current sitting president in 'King and Maxwell' is based on the Iran/Contra scandal? It seems far-fetched, especially since Reagan was never convicted. And to make matters worse, the author uses it as the reason why an imaginary couple committed suicide, which drove the culprit crazy. I mean, why not pick liberal LBJ, who caused the deaths of over 50,000 troops through intentional lies? Despite the biased political slant, I deducted two stars from my rating. However, I added one star back for the entertaining sound effects.
  • Do you enjoy excessive dramatization? Do you have a fondness for implausible conspiracy theories? Were you aware that hacking into a 15-year-old's email is easier than hacking into an adult's? Hey, Mr. Baldacci, here's a tip. I'm more interested in your storytelling than your sound effects, so please refrain from adding occasional engine noises and such to create a "realistic" atmosphere. It's actually quite distracting. The same goes for the different voices; just have someone simply read the book. While The Camel Club was a bit far-fetched, I was hoping that the return of King and Maxwell would bring back the action-packed excitement of Absolute Power. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
  • Baldacci had a series of subpar attempts, but it seems like he has made a comeback with King and Maxwell. They are solid characters, although not quite as exceptional as the Camel Club crew, which is a tough act to follow. Baldacci has definitely improved the dialogue, especially for King. It's difficult to determine if the Maxwell dialogue is as weak as it appears or if Cassidy is simply making it seem worse than it actually is. The sound effects can be annoying, but fortunately, they're not overly abundant. The premise might be far-fetched, but that's to be expected in the thriller genre. Baldacci once again demonstrates his ability to craft a compelling story that keeps the reader engaged until the very end. This book is definitely worth your time.
