Summary

Told in his own words, a very personal story from the star of many beloved and classic comedies, including Young Frankenstein, The Producers, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Gene Wilder is one of the great comic actors who defined the 1970s and 1980s in movies. From his work with Woody Allen, to the rich group of movies he made with Mel Brooks, to his partnership on screen with Richard Pryor, Wilder's performances are still discussed and celebrated today. KISS ME LIKE A STRANGER is an intimate glimpse of the man behind the image on the screen. In this book, Wilder talks about everything from his experiences in psychoanalysis to why he got into comedy-his first goal was to be a Shakespearean actor-to how a midwestern childhood with a sick mother changed him. He writes about the creative process on stage and on screen, and divulges moments from life on the sets of some of the most iconic movies of our time. He also opens up about his search for love and his marriages, including his marriage to comedienne Gilda Radner. But the core of KISS ME LIKE A STRANGER is an actor's search for truth and a thoughtful analysis of why the choices he made-some of them so serendipitous they were practically accidental-changed the course of his life.

  • This book is quite captivating. I would definitely purchase it again. However, after finishing this book, I still admire him as an actor but not as much as a person. It bothered me that he didn't fight for the life of his child when his girlfriend decided to have an abortion. He portrays his decision as noble, but it feels more like convenience. Nevertheless, I still found it to be an enjoyable read and would consider buying it again.
  • I've been a fan of his work for as long as I can remember, and getting a sneak peek behind the scenes was absolutely enchanting. Hearing his voice once more brought immense joy to my heart.
  • I related deeply to the impact of military school trauma described in the book. I greatly appreciated the author's honesty and bravery in not only writing about it but also delivering a compelling narration. However, I couldn't help but sense an underlying sense of profound depression and solipsistic apathy emanating from Gene. Is that the entirety of his experience? Was he merely a brilliant actor concealing a grim, miserable core masked by saccharine sentimentality and bitterness? Gene Wilder had no clue how significant he was to us, how his communication resonated with us. It was true magical razzmatazz, not the senseless kind, but the kind that sparkles like the sun. That's not just acting; it stems from a soul ablaze that cannot be extinguished. Neither age nor hair loss can dampen its authenticity; if anything, they should enhance it. He should still be out there, right now, with his eyes blazing like a cataract, utterly captivating and astonishing us, even scaring the living daylights out of us kids. His comedy exuded the madness of a man who loathed the world's stupidity but bore it with a grin, even if it was through gritted teeth. And yet, amidst it all, he showered us with love. That's precisely why he portrayed God so remarkably well. Gene, please, do it again.
  • This memoir by an incredible individual is absolutely fantastic. I strongly recommend it to any fan out there. Normally, I tend to increase the playback speed, but with this book, I couldn't help but keep it at the regular pace. Gene's narration is absolutely perfect.
  • Mr. Wilder's narration of "Kiss Me Like a Stranger: My Search for Love and Art" was absolutely captivating. I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in the story and even went as far as to visit YouTube to watch the scene he had just described. The audiobook proved to be an engaging and thought-provoking experience. The execution of this audio production was exceptional, leaving me thoroughly impressed.
  • If you're in the mood for Gene Wilder sharing a collection of unconventional tales about romantic encounters, then this audiobook will definitely appeal to you. However, if that doesn't interest you, it's best to give it a pass. Personally, I find it hard to comprehend how anyone could enjoy this book.
