Summary

On a lazy Sunday in 1954, twelve-year old Jerry Schilling wandered into a Memphis touch football game, only to discover that his team was quarterbacked by a nineteen-year old Elvis Presley, the local teenage whose first record, "That's All Right," had just debuted on Memphis radio. The two became fast friends, even as Elvis turned into the world's biggest star. In 1964, Elvis invited Jerry to work for him as part of his "Memphis Mafia," and Jerry soon found himself living with Elvis full-time in a Bel Air mansion and, later in his own room at Graceland. Over the next thirteen years Jerry would work for Elvis in various capacities---from bodyguard to photo double to co-executive producer on a karate film. But more than anything else he was Elvis's close friend and confidant: Elvis trusted Jerry with protecting his life when he received death threats, he asked Jerry to drive him and Pricilla to the hospital the day Lisa Marie was born and to accompany him during the famous "lost weekend" when he traveled to meet President Nixon at the White House.

  • I really enjoyed reading this book. It kept me engaged from beginning to end. Jerry Schilling shares some interesting insights about Elvis's early life, including their time playing football together in Memphis. It portrays Elvis as a down-to-earth guy, despite his immense fame and talent. He truly was one of a kind and will always hold a special place in my heart. No other singer or performer can ever compare to him. I will always miss him and cherish his memory. I want to express my gratitude to Jerry Schilling for writing this incredible book.
  • I gotta say, this book about Elvis is top-notch. Gary Shilling does an incredible job of taking us on this wild ride, sharing his unbelievable life and friendship with Elvis. The writing is amazing, and I couldn't stop reading once I started. Any Elvis fan absolutely needs to read this. Big thanks to Mr. Shilling for sharing his story, it was truly an honor to read.
  • This audiobook offers a deep dive into the personal life of an extraordinary individual, who also happens to be known as "The King". It provides an intimate and affectionate perspective.
  • It takes a bit of time to pick up pace, but it's definitely worth hanging in there. I was genuinely taken aback when he mentioned Elvis's passing, despite knowing it was inevitable.
  • I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. I couldn't tear myself away from it. It's great to see that the author wrote it with a lot of respect for Elvis. Jerry did a fantastic job of portraying both Elvis and their friendship with dignity. The book was captivating, entertaining, educational, and incredibly heartbreaking. The final chapter was particularly difficult to listen to. It began with a deep sense of sadness and only intensified from there, bringing back memories of the moment I first learned about Elvis' passing on the radio. I couldn't help but sob, both then and during the last chapter. There's something about Elvis that we, or at least I, felt a strong connection to. I felt a closeness to him then, and I still do now. I wish I could sit down with Jerry and have a conversation about Elvis. I'm glad that he had the privilege of experiencing Elvis' friendship and, more importantly, his love. Jerry was like family to Elvis. Now, with the recent passing of Lisa Marie, I just want to say, "Jerry, there are no words to adequately express my feelings. I know her passing must have been incredibly difficult for you. I genuinely hope that you find comfort and peace through the love that God has for you. Thank you for sharing your friend, Elvis."
  • I really enjoyed everything about this book, from beginning to end. Jerry did a great job showcasing the special bond he had with Elvis Presley, who was like a dear friend and brother to him. I was captivated by every single moment in this book, and I can't wait to read it again.
  • I had a great time listening to Jerry Schilling's perspective in 'Me and a Guy Named Elvis: My Lifelong Friendship With Elvis Presley.' The opening part, where Jerry recounts his initial encounter with Elvis, was particularly captivating for me.
  • The narrator did a solid job with the reading. Personally, I wasn't a fan of his Elvis voice, but that's probably because it just didn't sound like the real deal. It would have been great if Jerry had narrated the entire book. However, I'm glad he at least read the first chapter and prologue. The story itself is well-written, and Jerry truly comes across as a loyal friend to Elvis as he reminisces about their lives intertwining. Jerry skillfully weaves together events with his own unique insights and perspective. It's worth noting that he includes opinions from Elvis himself, as heard in the interview at the end. Jerry and Elvis shared a long-lasting friendship that endured both disagreements and good times. Some readers may be disappointed if they were expecting groundbreaking revelations. But let's remember a few things. Firstly, not everything in a friendship needs to be made public. Secondly, this is Jerry's personal story, from his own perspective. If someone else has a different take on the same event, it's irrelevant. And lastly, if all you're after is gossip, drama, and falsehoods just for the sake of new information, then this book isn't for you. In my opinion, this is one of the finest books ever written about Elvis. While I don't agree with Jerry's opinion on everything, it's clear that he wrote this book with genuine love for Elvis.
  • I'm a huge fan of this book about Elvis, written by his close friend Jerry. He delivers the inside scoop on what Elvis was truly like, which is what we're all dying to know. The account is both honest and affectionate, showcasing their genuine love and friendship. It's an incredibly captivating read. In my opinion, this book, along with the one by Linda, stands out as the very best. Unlike some other authors who seemed to be using Elvis for personal gain and didn't actually care about him, Ginger's book comes to mind, this one is the real deal.
