Summary

It was one of Eve Dallas's earliest takedowns, back in her uniform days. A monster named Isaac McQueen had been abducting young victims and leaving them scarred in both mind and body. Thanks to Eve, he wound up where he belonged, removed from civilized society in Rikers. But he's not behind bars anymore. After his escape, McQueen has two things in mind. One is to take up where he left off, preying on the young and innocent - when necessary, with the help of a female partner all too willing to be manipulated and to aid and abet his crimes. His other goal: to get revenge on the woman who stopped him all those years ago, now a high-profile lieutenant in the NYPSD and married to one of the city's richest men. Commanding Eve's attention with a chilling and brazen crime, McQueen sets off the chase-forcing Eve down a road marked with blood and tears, a road that eventually leads southwest to Dallas, Texas, the home Eve fled long ago. And each new twist brings her closer to the harrowing memory of when she wasn't a hardened detective but a vulnerable girl just like McQueen's innocent prey. As her husband, Roarke, tries to rescue her from the nightmares that claw at her mind, and her partner, Peabody, doggedly works to support her, Eve must confront - and call upon - the darkest parts of her own soul in order to survive.

  • I couldn't tear myself away from this book because it was incredibly captivating. The storyline took a refreshing twist that kept me engaged throughout. It's hard to fathom how this book managed to surpass the quality of many others in the series. It left me craving for more and eagerly anticipating the next installment in the "In Death" series. The narrator did an amazing job, adding to the overall experience.
  • The story had a good pace initially, but then it got stuck. It felt like Robb was trying to prolong the book and make everyone listen to irrelevant issues. I thought the slow parts would pay off in the end, but then the story abruptly concluded. Some of the chapters towards the end could have been cut without impacting the overall book or its ending. Susan Ericksen did a solid job narrating, and the book was decent.
  • If you're a fan of this series, this installment takes you back to the beginning. Eve's past becomes a major player in this book, and it's a wild ride for the listener. She's strong and determined not to let this case affect her, even though it dredges up memories from her early days. It's not just a case, but a personal threat to both her and Roarke. Roarke is by her side, understanding her better than she understands herself. With the support of her team, this book is truly satisfying. I absolutely adored it, and Susan Ericksen does an incredible job bringing the characters, drama, and humor to life. If you were initially a fan of Anita Blake but ended up disappointed with the direction her character took, I recommend giving these books a try. Eve Dallas is tough yet vulnerable, and she has the perfect partner in crime with Roarke. It's a fantastic series!
  • I'm a big fan of Eve Dallas, but I felt that the author went a bit overboard with the coincidences in this book. I don't want to spoil anything for others, but there was a HUGE coincidence that happened which really disappointed me. Additionally, I'm not a fan of Eve always having to engage in physical fights with every antagonist she encounters. I appreciate her intelligence and independence, and don't feel the need for her to personally beat up the bad guys. Overall, the book was okay, but I think it would have been better if the author had avoided including such unlikely and unnecessary coincidences in the story.
  • I absolutely loved this book! It had all the elements that I look forward to in a JD Robb novel, and it had me so hooked that I stayed up all night just to listen to the entire story.
  • I typically dig this series, but this book was lacking in the narrative department. It was mostly focused on Eve tackling her personal struggles, which got a bit repetitive and tiresome over time. I'm looking forward to the next installment, hoping that Eve has dealt with all of this and we can get back to the good stuff.
  • This book really dives into Eve's backstory and provides a wealth of information about her past. It addresses a multitude of burning questions that I was desperate to have answered. The story is an exhilarating blend of action, humor, and sensuality (Roarke is just irresistible). I must emphasize how incredibly Susan Ericksen brings these books to life through her narration. She wholeheartedly throws herself into each character, ensuring that they are all distinct and captivating to listen to. Just a friendly reminder, it's best to start with book 1, "Naked in Death." Enjoy your reading (or should I say, listening) experience! P.S. Although this isn't my typical genre, I'm absolutely smitten with this series. I usually lean towards fantasy, paranormal, and sci-fi.
  • I was hooked and couldn't put it down. This installment of Eve and Roarke's journey was fantastic. Susan Ericksen's narration was absolutely amazing, bringing the characters to life in an incredible way.
  • Susan Ericksen does an amazing job bringing this series to life through her narration. Initially, I believed that the previous visit to Texas in Eve Dallas's childhood had put the matter to rest, leaving nothing more to be said. However, Robb surprised me by introducing a fresh twist to the subject. While numerous individuals have already reviewed this new release, I don't think I can contribute much more to the discussion. If you're a fan of the Death Series, you're bound to adore this book.
  • I have the entire collection of 35 "In Death" books on audio. Every single book in the series is well-written and expertly narrated. I am completely enamored with the characters, and the stories are incredibly captivating, leaving you guessing until the very last moment. If you enjoy mysteries, these books will undoubtedly be a favorite for you. I am deeply grateful to J.D. Robb for yet another outstanding addition to the series. I am eagerly anticipating the next installment! I have managed to get many of my friends hooked on this series - I'm a massive fan!
