  • I absolutely adored this book for so many reasons. The portrayal of the challenges faced when coming out in a society that doesn't fully accept it was exceptionally well-executed. Without giving away any spoilers, I was deeply moved and felt genuine empathy for the characters as they navigated their very real struggles. I even shed a few tears! The only reason I deducted a star in my rating for the performance was due to a few minor hiccups in the cadence. However, overall, it was incredibly well done! If you're in search of a heartfelt story about love triumphing over obstacles, sprinkled with relatable real-world issues (although the resolutions may be somewhat predictable), then I highly recommend giving this audiobook a listen. It will captivate you, and you'll find it hard to put it down and go to bed.
  • This book, "Off Base", is a spin-off from the #gaymers series, featuring characters from the previous books. The story revolves around Zach and Pike, who have a connection through their hospital stay and their shared interest in gaming. Zach is still in the closet and Pike is openly gay, creating an interesting dynamic between them. While Zach's conservative upbringing and Pike's free-spirited background add complexity to their relationship, they still manage to have a deep connection. Initially, I was frustrated with Zach's denial of his sexuality and Pike's willingness to keep their relationship hidden. However, as the story progressed, I realized that Zach needed the time with Pike to come to terms with his feelings. Pike, having experienced a similar situation in the past, was cautious but hopeful that things would be different this time. While there aren't many explicit scenes, the intimate moments between Zach and Pike are both tender and passionate. Pike takes on a teaching role, using pornography as a way to help Zach explore his desires. The chemistry between the two characters is undeniable, and I found myself rooting for them throughout the book. Although I wished for a more conclusive ending, there is hope for their future together. As for the audiobook, Tyler Stevens does an excellent job as the narrator. His voice is pleasing, and he effectively conveys the emotions of the characters. While I appreciated his portrayal of Pike, I would have preferred Zach's voice to be deeper, creating a clearer distinction between the two characters. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this audiobook to fans of the book or anyone who enjoys military men, first-time gay experiences, and charismatic main characters. Overall, I give both the book and the audio 4.5 out of 5 stars.
  • I just finished reading/listening to my first book by Annabeth Albert, 'Off Base', and I absolutely adored it! I'm already itching to dive into the rest of the series. There's just something so captivating about the way strong men unite. The narration was top-notch as well!
  • This is a tale about Pike and Zachary, who are connected through mutual friends but initially did not form a strong bond. Pike is openly gay, while Zach is too afraid to come out. However, circumstances bring them together to live in the same house and collaborate on its renovation, which leads to the development of feelings. Even though Zach has been concealing his attraction towards men for a long time, he and Pike begin a clandestine relationship that remains confined within the house. Naturally, this arrangement eventually becomes difficult to maintain and secrets are bound to be revealed. I enjoyed the characters of both Pike and Zach, and my heart went out to Zach in particular, as he, despite being in the military, struggles to express himself due to his conservative Christian upbringing. Pike, on the other hand, provides comedic relief, although he can also be serious, especially when it concerns his beloved pets. Throughout the story, both characters experience significant personal growth, gaining confidence in themselves and believing in the rightness of their actions. Additionally, I appreciated the appearance of characters from the gaymers trilogy, who offer advice, support, and are not afraid to call out Pike and Zach when they are being foolish. Unfortunately, I was not particularly fond of the narrator's voice, as it did not align with how I had imagined the characters sounding, which was a disappointment for me.
  • I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator nailed it when it came to giving each character a unique voice and capturing their emotions. I binged the entire story in one go, couldn't stop listening.
  • This audiobook, "Off Base," strikes the perfect balance between intense emotions, vulnerability, and the exhilaration of first love. The main character, who has been outed, finds himself caught in a whirlwind of feelings for someone who is not reciprocating. The narration is superb, truly bringing the story to life. The steamy intimate scenes are described in an incredibly captivating and explicit manner.
  • I really got into this series, even more than I expected. Now I'm enjoying listening to it. It's actually a really great coming out story with interesting characters and a mostly believable plot. Zack's struggle with coming out and the consequences could have been portrayed with more depth, especially when it came to dealing with his parents. But considering the limitations of the format and the focus of the story, it was handled pretty well, even though it was only lightly explored. The narration by Tyler Stevens was pretty solid too, although I wasn't a big fan of the voice he gave Apollo. Did I detect a bit of Brooklyn accent in a native Californian of Greek heritage? Oh well, it's not enough to deduct a star. The rest of the story was narrated quite well. Overall, it was a good listen.
  • I have to be honest it started off slow but it kept getting better and better. Zac and Pike just grew and grew on me, Zac's innocents was super cute and hot at the same time. Pike's patients for this man, all it all made for a awesome read. Of course thanks to great narration of charters.
  • This was the first of my audio book from Audiobooks.com subscription. Firstly Audiobooks.com is such an easy app to use - Good breakdown of categories and functionality - definitely worth using. Re the story - loved it. Really enjoy the realness of the scenario and having macho men as the key /supporting characters. Great character growth and a fantastic story line.
