  • I absolutely loved this book! Being someone who is fascinated by history, anthropology, geopolitics, and other similar subjects, I found this book to be incredibly captivating on multiple levels. There are a lot of people out there who are being too critical and unable to properly evaluate this book due to their own narrow perspectives. The truth is, not only is it a plausible scenario, but it could actually happen in today's world. The timeline presented in the book was both chilling and engrossing. I thought the writing, narration, and technical accuracy of this novel were truly excellent. Additionally, as a former infantry officer myself, I can confidently say that the author has a commendable understanding of land warfare. Have a great time driving!
  • I've bought so many titles on this service, I can't even keep track anymore. But out of all of them, this is the first one I felt compelled to review. The story in 'One Second After' is absolutely incredible. It's emotional, heart-wrenching, and truly shocking. Everything that unfolds in this book hits so close to home, because deep down, you know it's not too far-fetched. I found myself shedding tears when the characters suffered, smiling along with them, and cheering when they overcame immense challenges. I can't recommend this title enough. Overall, it's a profoundly moving 'what if' story that really makes you think. I would love to see a sequel to this amazing book!
  • This wild journey through a post-apocalyptic America delivers a powerful message about the real threat of electromagnetic pulses and our vulnerabilities. The voice acting by Joe Barrett is truly remarkable, considering the wide range of characters, accents, and narratives he needed to bring to life. However, the novel is plagued with predictability, as it heavily foreshadows the impending disaster with transparent plot points. The constant repetition of the term "unprepared" drives home the fact that we are ill-equipped to handle even small-scale acts of terrorism that can have devastating consequences due to our reliance on technology. The idea of America being brought to its knees by relatively low-tech weapons is truly terrifying. The main issue with the book is its lack of balance. The characters endure relentless suffering and at times become insufferable. None of them feel particularly believable, especially the female characters who seem to exist in a stereotypical world of masculine fantasy. They range from motherly figures to predictable love interests. It's not surprising that the main character, with his military background and extensive knowledge of history, navigates the challenges effortlessly. It's also predictable that he forms a bond with a new love interest amidst the chaos, given his status as a widower. Additionally, the negative events that befall those close to the main character can be anticipated long before they occur. The book missed an opportunity to be more subtle and allow the tragedy to unfold with cleverness. Instead, it relentlessly pushes a right-wing perspective without leaving room for other viewpoints. The plot lacks depth and fails to explore more nuanced themes. Ultimately, the book comes across as needlessly hurtful. I wouldn't recommend purchasing it.
