Summary

I am Meredith, princess of faerie, wielder of the hands of Flesh and Blood, and at long last, I am with child–twins, fathered by my royal guard. Though my uncle, Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, claims that he is the true father since he abducted me from my home, betrayed, and defiled me. And now he has branded my guards as a threat to my unborn children.

  • The Mary Gentry series has always been my absolute favorite among Ms. Hamilton's body of work, and I've been a loyal fan, eagerly purchasing each new installment as soon as it's released. Unfortunately, I must admit that Swallowing Darkness is not her strongest offering. The descriptive passages tend to go on and on, and the new narrator is simply awful! If Ms. Merlington is no longer available, they should at least find someone who can bring some life and variation to the reading. On top of that, it seems strange that Mary, who was born and raised in America, now suddenly has a British accent. It's a real shame about this particular release... hopefully, the next one will meet the high standards set by previous books in the series.
  • Just like all of LKH's books, this one definitely lived up to my expectations. However, I found the narrator to be quite distracting. It can be challenging to keep up with a book that has numerous characters, and it would have been helpful if the narrator made an effort to differentiate between them by using distinct voices. Honestly, I feel like I could have just gotten this on my Kindle and had it read back to me by the computerized voice, which would have had more expressive intonation than this narrator.
  • I'm a huge fan of this series, but I have to agree with another reviewer who mentioned considering reading the physical book instead. Once Black started narrating, I immediately had the feeling that I had accidentally picked up the wrong audiobook. The only thing that kept me from stopping right away were the references to familiar characters. Black's narration is extremely distracting and I really hope that we'll go back to Merlington's narration. Although it will mean skipping this one when I listen to the series again, which I do frequently, in order to move on to one that feels more in sync. Unless I read the book and find out that the writing style has actually changed as well. I'm left feeling pretty confused by what I've listened to. I think the storyline is decent, but I'll have to read it to be certain because listening to it has made me feel quite uneasy.
