This story is incredibly captivating and gripping, making it hard to transition back to reality after finishing it. The plot centers around a special task force comprised of an alienist (a psychologist or psychiatrist), his reporter friend, and innovative members of the NY police department, working together to apprehend a dangerous and cunning serial killer. While this storyline may seem overdone due to shows like "Criminal Minds" and "CSI," Carr's depiction of late 19th century New York creates a fascinatingly intriguing narrative. Carr's extensive knowledge of the historical context adds depth to the story, incorporating fictional roles for renowned figures such as J.P Morgan and Theodore Roosevelt. As the task force delves into the investigation, they navigate various parts of the city, from dilapidated tenement buildings to opulent locations frequented by the ultra-wealthy. Carr's meticulous portrayal of 19th century New York pulls readers into this gritty and realistic world plagued by poverty, corruption, and debauchery. The stark contrast between technological marvels like the Brooklyn Bridge and the squalid dwellings of ill repute creates the perfect backdrop for a chilling tale about a depraved serial killer, a product of this dark underbelly, and an alienist's attempt to comprehend the mind behind such atrocities in order to bring him to justice. Set in the year 1896 in New York City, "The Alienist" is a gripping mystery centered around a serial killer. The story follows three main characters: psychologist Laszlo Kreizler, New York Times reporter John Schuyler Moore, and police department secretary Sara Howard. Notably, Theodore Roosevelt, the future president, also plays a significant role. The victims of the serial murders are young homosexual males. Written with great skill and filled with historical details of late 19th century NYC, the novel is narrated by journalist John Schuyler Moore, reflecting on the events after 1896. Though occasionally wordy, the book remains engaging and captivating. Originally published in 1994, "The Alienist" comes highly recommended. The narration by George Guidall in 2012 is particularly exceptional.

Finished binge watching The Alienist on Netflix this afternoon. Wow, what a great series. Dark, twisted and fantastic acting. If the book is half as good as the mini series (which it likely is), it most certainly is one to add to my list of must reads.

So I just found out that The Alienist on Netflix is based on THE Caleb Carr’s book. How did I not know this earlier?? BINGE O’CLOCK. Bought The Alienist for RM5 in 2004 from a second hand bookstore in that old mall in PJ S14 (it’s Jaya Shopping Centre now). So lucky.

I’m about to start The Alienist (1994) by Caleb Carr. You might think I’ve strayed from my normal path since it was written in 1994 and I normally read late 19th / early 20th century books. However, it’s a historical fiction novel that begins in 1919. It’s different but the same.

When The Alienist TV series was announced, I was intrigued and looking forward to it despite (or maybe because of) the fact that I hadn't read the book. As I was watching it, it moved along very slowly. The only reason I watched to the finale was that it's a limited series.

He was just on the Alienist on TNT. It ended this week. They haven’t said if it’s coming back. It was a limited series based off a book. It did so well I hope it does comes back. If you haven’t seen it you should. He plays Teddy Roosevelt when he was NYPD’s Police Commissioner

THE ALIENIST on TNT was a huge disappointment. Hey TNT- Just follow the book!!! Was pretty boring unfortunately. Waste of very good actors. Weird sex scenes added for no reason- nothing to do with characters, relationships or plot.

I’ve never loved any characters as much as I love the characters in The Alienist. The TNT adaptation way outdid my expectations for the show. I am glad it took so long to adapt the book.. that 20+ year wait was so worth it! Caleb Carr is BRILLIANT!

Sorry to see THE ALIENIST come to an end. Very satisfying wrap-up. My favorite show since PENNY DREADFUL. Curious to see if TNT adapts Caleb Carr's 2nd book in the series, THE ANGEL OF DARKNESS, or comes up with something else. In the meantime, onto TRUST and THE TERROR.

Wish I could recommend "The Alienist." I enjoyed the book but the first episode of the TV version was glacially paced and populated by thin, undifferentiated characters. The book's application of modern criminology to Victorian London now seems old hat. I bailed early.

I was not a fan of The Alienist series' decision to add a red herring killer who wasn't in the book but that episode-ending shot of him smiling at a crowd of boys to show that his teeth are silver from syphilis medication is absolutely haunting.

Rewatching the Alienist pilot after having read the book and I'm so glad I decided to wait and read it. I love starting it already knowing who everybody is. I can appreciate the visuals without being suck on exposition.

The book is beautiful. I have read all of Caleb Carr's books, & I have given them all away after I read them, but The Alienist . Because I have read the Alienist, I can't like the show, which sucks because the first episode was beautifully shot and the actors are great.

Right now I read books at a pace of about 10 pages a day scattered throughout the day, and The Alienist does not hold up to this method. Every time I read it, the characters manage to proceed down a hall about 6 feet before I set it down again

I think the Alienist could have been better if it were cut from 10 episodes to 6 or 8. Don't waste time on details and characters that are in the book, but can't be fully developed in the show. Focus on the main plot only & the primary characters.

My mid-season review of the Alienist: slow, plodding period drama that takes too long to get where it's going. Also, since it's based on a book, you can tell they add in little details from the book, but they are undeveloped in the show, so it's confusing & unnecessary. Grade: B-

He wrote the Alienist, a decade ago, which was a big hit. It's a miniseries w/ Luke Evans & Daniel Bruh on now. That book was really interesting bec of history (turn of century NewYork). This may end up just being an escapism read but ideas are interesting.

A great way to get me to read any book is to show me an interview in which any part of the Thief 1 and 2 dev/design teams said it was an influence on Thief. This is why I bought and read The Alienist.

The Alienist has disappointed so far. If u haven't seen Netflix's Mindhunter I HIGHLY recommend it. As good as the book, it's about the beginning of the FBIs interviewing of killers in the 70s, leading them to coin the phrase "Serial Killer" & the start of profiling crime scenes.

Five Points is an excellent book about a lower Manhattan neighborhood in the 19th century (in fact, if memory serves it might have been where The Alienist is supposed to take place).

The Alienist by Caleb Carr - very interesting, but about 150 pages too long. I love long books as much as the next person, but there needs to be a good reason for it! In any case, I think it will fit TV really well so I'll be checking out the show based on it!

I watch only three shows on television. The Alienist is one of them. Superb acting, gorgeous costuming, richly elaborate set design,and moody photography capture the spirit of Caleb Carr’s book. A monumental achievement for all involved. Thank you, TNT!

Totally enamored with the TV adaptations of two of my favorite books, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, and Alias Grace. Gorgeous period design, brilliant writing, perfect casting. Watching feels like reading. (Not so fond of The Alienist but 2 out of 3 is good enough.)

Caleb Carr (author, THE ALIENIST) isn't the name I'd expect to see on a book. I have no idea why, but his name stands out to me. Some names just look different on paper, calmly demand attention. V. E. Schwab is another like that, as is Haruki Murakami.

I haven't started it yet but its a book I valued enough to give to my oldest son a few years ago. Was thrilled when I heard Netflix was doing a series. Hoping for the best. The last great book I read that later became movies were The Alienist and the Song of Ice and Fire series.

So here's the thing about Audible advertising the Alienist book during the TheAlienistTNT: as usual, while fine, the show is different enough from the book as to be frustrating. Not that my opinion matters, but I suggest the book, of course. And pick up the second one, too.

Even though it was several years ago when I first read it The Alienist is still the scariest book I have ever read. And so far the series is definitely doing it justice. But you would get more background especially in the New York City Police Department at that time.

The Alienist is good. Not like the book, exactly, but it passes. It captures all the dark suspense of the murders but misses all the other wonderful ancillary elements of the book. Also, Teddy Roosevelt fully supported Kreizler’s work and there was no “drama” between the two.

If you haven't already, check out The Alienist on TNT. Not only is it beautifully written and shot, but if you look up the photos of the actual historical figures, it's exceptionally well-cast. If you're not into TV shows, the book is delicious.

Tonight. Caleb Carr's THE ALIENIST on TNT. It was the very first book signing I attended in NYC 1994. Only a handful of people showed up and he had us sit in a semi-circle and it was more of an inclusive conversation. It was really cool.

Yes! The book was great. There is a second book "Angel of Darkness" which I haven't read it. But, one thing I really enjoyed about The Alienist was how real it felt. I felt like I was transported into the late 19th century, ya know? The suspense is top notch and loved the thrill.

Anyway, having this and _The Alienist_ out soon is kinda messing with my mind in a good way. Only two of my favorite books.

I am so sick of this. I really thought I'd like Copper, but that was one of the things that really ruined it for me. As best I recall, the boy prostitutes in The Alienist (the book, haven't seen the show) got more of a POV, actually.

and I had even fallen for an adult book before, I was OBSESSED with GONE WITH THE WIND (I know how even) for all of 9th and 10th grade. But THE ALIENIST it was ... something else. I just. I think it was the first book I ever felt, well, a fandom for.

The Alienist is the reason I wrote a (trunked) historical romance set in the Gilded Age NYC. Loved that book.

It was 25 years of battling against really bad interpretations of this book that it's finally getting it's chance for a tv adaptation. Be sure to catch the premiere of this period series The Alienist on Jan 22

The Alienist was an excellent book! That’s all I know about that, except that Caleb Carr’s subsequent books weren’t anything as good.

If anyone is into historical crime drama/psychology, you might check out the alienist, a book by Caleb Carr, which I recommend highly. It's also being made into a tv series that airs tomorrow

I loved ‘The Alienist’ but Caleb Carr doesn’t exactly seem too excited about the show. But I’m excited he’s working on a 3rd book in the series.

The Alienist was a a book that always stuck in my brain. A great historical novel. I’ve been waiting decades(!) for it to be made into a film or series. What time is it on? Please stay true to the story!

Having a hard time getting into The Alienist show. Why on earth did they cast someone 15 years younger than John and Lazlo when in the book she's their age? Gross.

Speaking of books being made into TV series, are you aware of The Alienist by Caleb Carr? I can’t remember if I’ve ever talked to you about this book. I read it back when I was still at the Coles in Pac Centre. At any rate, it’s also excellent. Crossing my fingers for the series.

I just found out that one of my favorite books, "The Alienist", will be turned into a TV series! Fantastic! Think "Mindhunter" but set in New York at the turn of the 20th century. Oooooh, I hope it's good! Gotta find my book and refresh my memory. :)
