Summary

In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics -a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the endless clash of armies we see in Congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of our improbable experiment in democracy. He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment.

  • Out of the two books he has written, I personally enjoyed "Dreams From My Father" more than "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream". The former provided personal insights and stories of self-discovery, which resonated with me. My hope was that reading both books would offer a clearer understanding of Obama's beliefs and his potential actions as president. However, upon finishing these books, I found myself unsatisfied and left with numerous unanswered questions. One aspect that disappointed me was the superficial description of the most significant turning points in Obama's life. Biographies become powerful and interesting when they delve into these moments in depth. I wanted to know more about how he fell into and eventually overcame drug use, as well as his journey towards religion. Unfortunately, these aspects were not adequately clarified. I struggled to discern whether Obama embraced religion as a means to connect with the community and genuinely found Jesus, or if he simply continued to rely on the church as a useful tool. The book was filled with numerous vignettes expressing sentiments like "I am like you," "I love the American Dream," "I want to help," and "I want to make change happen." However, it lacked concrete statements such as "I will do x" and "I believe y." My favorite presidents, JFK and Clinton, both expressed a positive vision while also presenting practical plans. I did not find the same level of focused practicality in Obama's volumes. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Obama's words and the way he articulates them. However, I expected more substance from these books. It is the unspoken aspects that ultimately left me feeling unsatisfied.
  • This book really left an impression on me, as well as the author himself. It's refreshing to see a politician who prioritizes being a human being over being a politician. After reading this book, I feel a renewed sense of hope and anticipation for the upcoming 2008 presidential election.
  • This book really nails it as a powerful and well-crafted message for a presidential hopeful. Obama seizes the opportunity to outline his political platform in a down-to-earth yet passionate manner, which is heightened by the fact that he narrates the audiobook himself. While it's clear that this book serves as a launchpad for his presidential bid, it feels refreshingly genuine and honest compared to standard campaign speeches. If you're curious to delve deeper into Obama as a potential candidate, this audiobook is a fantastic choice. Even for those who may lean politically right, but value a strong leader with unwavering morals over party affiliation, this audiobook is a top-notch pick. And lastly, even if you have no interest in the opposing party's candidates, Obama's message and vision eloquently laid out in this audiobook transcend party lines, alliances, and politics, speaking straight to the heart of every American.
