  • Shelby Foote, an esteemed author and revered national figure, has crafted a truly remarkable and eloquent account of the Civil War in "The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3: Red River to Appomattox". Personally, as a resident of the South, this narrative evoked strong emotions, leading me to shed tears on multiple occasions. Additionally, Foote's depiction of Lincoln as a flawed yet self-deprecating and humorous individual brought laughter to my lips. It is worth mentioning that some may argue that the South should have emancipated the slaves first before taking action by firing upon Fort Sumter.
  • This three-part series is a product of a different era. I believe that history has proven that the author is too kind in his portrayal of the Confederacy's motivations, but these volumes are an impressive achievement. They provide a much more comprehensive account of the Civil War, including its major figures and events. However, they do overlook the immense suffering endured by individual soldiers and civilians, instead focusing on the actions and decisions of leaders and generals. As a result, the narrative presents a surprisingly coherent depiction of the war, offering equal attention to both sides. It was a strange experience to listen to this without the South being depicted as the villains. Regardless of one's perspective on this matter, it can be a valuable exercise in gaining a different perspective. After finishing the book, I still felt a strong sense of the evil behind the Confederacy's cause, but with a better understanding of the individuals involved, which did not diminish my condemnation of the atrocities they committed. The writing is excellent, and the narrator will certainly grow on you.
  • I always heard amazing things about Shelby Foote's trilogy, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The only downside was the sense of emptiness I felt once I finished all three volumes. These books really helped me pass the time during long hours and miles on the road.
  • I was absolutely blown away by how this book managed to captivate me from start to finish! The sheer amount of research that went into crafting such intricate details is truly mind-blowing.
  • The storytelling in 'The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3: Red River to Appomattox' is absolutely amazing. The words and performance are filled with life and emotion that truly captivates the listener. This audiobook is without a doubt one of the best out there. It's definitely worth investing your time in all three volumes, as it will truly enrich your understanding and appreciation of the Civil War. A big thank you to the service for providing such a fantastic audiobook.
  • Shelby Foote dedicated a significant portion of his life to crafting this monumental narrative. The journey to Appomattox holds tremendous significance in the formation of the United States as a nation. To truly grasp the essence of the Civil War and its impact on the country, it is crucial to delve into the human aspects that fueled the rebellion.
  • Although well-written and engaging, this audiobook lacks a purely objective perspective on the Civil War. It heavily leans towards the Lost Cause narrative, which affects its overall rating of 3 stars. Some chapters, such as "The Martyrdom of Jeff Davis," seem out of place and reinforce the biased viewpoint. If you're looking for an entertaining and comprehensive exploration of the White Southern memory of the war, this is the book for you. However, it is advisable to complement it with a more objective history to gain a balanced perspective.
  • I really enjoyed this audiobook, particularly the way it was written and narrated. One thing that stood out to me was the effective use of personal letters from both prominent figures and regular soldiers in the armies.
