Summary

John C. Bogle's The Little Book of Index Investing is a power-packed explanation of why outperforming the market is an investor illusion. Instead, the founder of The Vanguard Group-the man who's been called "the conscience of the investment industry"*-recommends a simple, time-tested investment strategy that can deliver the greatest return to the greatest number of investors: indexing. Why? Investing is a zero-sum game where transaction costs, taxes, poor investment diversification, and poor market-timing (an affliction for most investors) hurts your portfolio more than it helps. Indexing eliminates that hurt. Bottom-line, if you can't be an index, why not invest in one? And you'll be all the happier and richer for it. *Time Magazine

  • Just as the title suggests, the concepts in this book are all about using common sense. The central idea of the book is to invest in Vanguard S&P500 Traditional Index Funds and simply hold onto them for the long term.
  • This book is amazing! If you're interested in understanding retirement investing, then you absolutely need to read it. However, there was one thing that left me a bit puzzled – Mr. Bogle seems to go back and forth on whether he recommends an index fund that tracks the S&P 500 or a Total Stock Market Index Fund.
  • This book is really crucial. Sure, you can boil down the main ideas to a few key points, but when you're considering investing your hard-earned money, it's important to fully grasp the concept. I'll definitely give it another listen!
  • This book is so repetitive! I could only manage to read the first 5 chapters. It keeps hammering in the point that mutual fund and stock picking are not good, while index funds are the way to go. It's like, okay, we get it. 🙄
  • I was expecting something fresh, but the only noticeable change is the narrator. The content remains identical to the old audiobook I already own. BOTTOMLINE: Invest in index funds. Simple as that.
  • I highly recommend this book because the guidance it provides reminds me of the kind of advice a parent would give to their children - sincere, genuine, and without any hidden agendas. Mr. Bogel addresses all the issues and concerns I have had about the investment industry for years, and more. His arguments and use of data are logical and applicable. Does reading this book guarantee financial investment success? Definitely not. But until a superior plan comes along, it serves as an excellent starting point.
  • This audiobook provides a concise and informative 5-hour discussion solely focused on the importance of investing in indexed funds. While this approach may be effective for some listeners, it may not be suitable for everyone.
