Summary

A beautiful woman asks private eye Sam Spade for his help. Spade doesn't believe her story, and when his partner gets murdered it soon becomes clear that he's right. As he digs deeper, he realises everyone is chasing the enigmatic falcon and is willing to kill for it. He also realises there is no-one he can trust - not the unctuous Fat Man, not the shrill Joel Cairo, not the suspicious police, and especially not the bewitching Brigid O'Shaughnessy. The Maltese Falcon - dry, uncluttered, witty and darkly unsentimental - is the finest book of its kind ever written.

  • I had watched the film a while back and was craving some mystery noir vibes, so I decided to purchase this book. Since I couldn't recall most of the plot, I was easily engrossed in this intricate tale of deceit, con artists, and hidden treasures. The narrator did an outstanding job of giving each character a distinct voice, with Joe Cairo sounding eerily similar to Peter Lorre! (I think it would have been a distraction if Sam Spade sounded like Humphrey Bogart.) I was so captivated by the story that I practically listened to it nonstop until the very end. It's a fantastic read for a long journey or a lazy day indoors when it's pouring rain.
  • Being a fan of noir detective fiction, I felt compelled to start from the beginning and dive into the only novel featuring the original noir detective, Sam Spade. (I haven't watched any film adaptations of this book.) The book exudes a classic noir vibe, and Spade himself is undeniably a cool character. In a way, he reminded me of an earlier version of Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder (a must-read for fans of this type of calm and collected detective). However, I found the actual storyline to be somewhat underwhelming. Surprisingly, Spade didn't do much detecting at all - the mystery practically solved itself when a stranger stumbled into Spade's office and the villain spilled all the details. Spade mainly played the role of a stoic, moving from one point to another. As for the ending, it caught me off guard with its "if you loved me, you wouldn't..." moments. When did they even have time to fall in love? They only met a handful of times, had a brief encounter, and suddenly Spade was smitten. I guess it's a different era, but still... On the bright side, the narration was solid and befitting of the story.
  • I absolutely loved diving into this timeless detective mystery set in the 1930s! From beginning to end, it had me hooked with its vibrant characters, sharp conversations, captivating storyline, and outstanding narration. With a total runtime of over seven hours, it was pure bliss throughout. Prepare to be transported to the misty streets of 1930s San Francisco and thoroughly enjoy every minute of this thrilling experience!
  • This is definitely a must read for anyone interested in crime literature and film noir. It establishes bundles of tropes. The writing is brilliant, the characters are fascinating and I would definitely recommend this reader. His interpretations hit the nail on the head.
