Summary

In this landmark book of popular science, Daniel E. Lieberman-chair of the department of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University and a leader in the field-gives us a lucid and engaging account of how the human body evolved over millions of years, even as it shows how the increasing disparity between the jumble of adaptations in our Stone Age bodies and advancements in the modern world is occasioning this paradox: greater longevity but increased chronic disease.

  • It's mind-boggling to consider that humanity has existed for hundreds of thousands of years. The initial section of the book takes us through a fascinating lesson in evolution, while the second part delves into our current state and the potential implications for the future. Lieberman presents the information in a very accessible manner, frequently highlighting evolutionary facts gleaned from fossil discoveries, as well as making assumptions. There are some surprising revelations, such as the fact that most individuals possess 1-3% Neanderthal DNA, and that the majority of the world's population can be traced back to a small community of just 14,000 people in Africa. On the whole, Lieberman manages to breathe life into what could have easily been a dry read.
