  • Rosalyn Landor once again delivers an outstanding performance in narrating this hilarious tale, "The Undomestic Goddess". Sophie Kinsella's attention to detail is reminiscent of Angela Thirkell, who expertly weaved historical elements into her stories. Kinsella clearly put in the effort to research commercial cooking, international finance, and corporate law, as well as exploring scams and spending time with professional housekeepers. The way she presents these topics makes them both understandable and captivating. As someone with personal experience in commercial kitchens and motels, I found myself relating to the protagonist, Samantha, who, despite being a talented corporate lawyer, struggles when it comes to everyday tasks like making coffee and cooking. I couldn't help but giggle as she navigates the challenges of laundry mishaps, baking disasters, and making beds. The situation is simply delightful, especially when the overconfident know-it-all receives her comeuppance. With Samantha's newfound free time on weekends and evenings, thanks to leaving her high-pressure job, it's no surprise that romance enters the picture. Similar to "Northanger Abbey", Kinsella plays with the idea that a young lady dreaming of a gentleman before he shows interest in her is improper, but Samantha, following in Catherine Morland's footsteps, disregards this advice, leading to an engaging storyline. Kinsella subtly suggests that being a woman in itself is a rewarding experience, and finding love with a decent man is the cherry on top.
  • I absolutely loved "The Undomestic Goddess". It was such a delightful experience to dive into the story of a highly stressed lawyer who unexpectedly finds herself as a housekeeper for a wealthy couple in the countryside. The whole journey was extremely entertaining, and I was genuinely sad when it came to an end. The narrator did an outstanding job, truly bringing the story to life. Overall, it's a fantastic book that will resonate with anyone who daydreams about a more uncomplicated and laid-back lifestyle.
