Summary

Annihilation: Southern Reach Trilogy, Book 1 Audiobook by Jeff VanderMeer is the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy. The story opens with four women consisting of a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist and a surveyor go on an expedition to an uninhabited and protected area called as Area X. The members are not identified by name in the novel.

The biologist is the narrator of the story. The group is a part of 12th expedition to the area. It is also revealed that her husband was also a part of the previous expedition to the Area X. It is supposed to be a fatal expedition as the previous expeditions have led to death of all the team members.

The group suddenly discovers a topographic anomaly near their camp. The top of a structure which appears like a buried tower emerges from the ground. Its interior is similar to a spiraling staircase which goes endlessly inside the earth. The team examines the upper areas of the tower and they find strange luminescent plant growth and scurrying animals. There are differences among the group and the expedition party begins to break apart.

The biologist feels a personal connection developing between her and the Area X. This affinity to the Area X brings about changes in the biologist. She discovers that the circumstances of their expedition may have ulterior motives. She also feels that considering her position, the personal connection will make her a prominent figure in the expedition group. She goes down to the tower to search for creatures and other important clues which may have caused the fungal writings.

Review

Annihilation: Southern Reach Trilogy, Book 1 Audiobook by Jeff VanderMeer is a science fiction novel. It received positive reviews from the critics and the readers. The plot is compact and fast paced with many unexpected twists and turns to keep the readers engaged till the climax. The character of the biologist and her motivation to act in a particular way have been detailed by the author. The manner in which the author has transformed the landscape of Area X into horror and mystery is commendable. This is a recommended read for the science fiction fans.

There was so much potential for this concept to be explored in various genres such as horror, adventure, or fantasy, but unfortunately, it fell short. I was constantly waiting for something to happen, but the main character's dialogues and journal entries didn't create much suspense. Surprisingly, she never seemed scared, just a bit tired and quite angry. And the ending? It lacked any real conclusion. Despite its shortcomings, I still give it a solid 5 stars for the untapped potential of the story. The initial idea was great, but it failed to convey any significant message.

I spent way too much time thinking about who would be the perfect narrator for this book. Surprisingly, I didn't even consider McCormick, known for her work in The Hunger Games, but she proved to be an amazing choice right from the first line. Her calm and detached narration perfectly matched the biologist's scientific and clinical mindset. The story is narrated through the biologist's journal, which adds depth to both the mysteries of "Area X" and the character herself. McCormick doesn't go overboard with differentiating the characters' voices, but she does enough to effectively capture their essence, much like the biologist would. The only exception is the psychologist, the leader of the expedition, whose voice has a distinct formal tone that stands out. As for the story itself, it revolves around a 12th all-female expedition to the enigmatic "Area X" after 11 previous disastrous attempts. The driving force behind the narrative is the compelling need to uncover the secrets of the tower that shouldn't even exist, yet holds strange markings on its walls. The mysteries of "Area X" and "The Southern Reach" continue to deepen and expand throughout the book, setting the stage for further exploration in the subsequent novels. However, the biologist's journal manages to tell a complete story of inquiry, discovery, and personal transformation. Overall, this audiobook is fantastic and highly recommended.

This book was a real struggle for me to get through. It didn't meet my expectations at all. I was anticipating an exhilarating sci-fi escapade, but instead, it turned out to be a tedious and uninteresting read. It's worth mentioning that it was also quite perplexing at certain points. Perhaps there are people who thoroughly enjoy it, but unfortunately, I'm not one of them. I genuinely had hopes of liking it, but alas, it just didn't work for me.

This book gives me major vibes of my kid going on and on about their never-ending dreams, with every single excruciating detail. You know what I mean? No need to say more. Oh, and let me tell you, the narrator in this audiobook is absolutely dreadful, just like other people have mentioned in their reviews.

I'm puzzled as to why this book received such positive reviews after reading what others have written. As someone who enjoys sci-fi and fantasy, I've consumed a wide range of titles, from mediocre to exceptional classics. However, in my opinion, this particular book ranks among the worst, if not the absolute worst, that I've ever encountered in my reading and listening experiences. It feels like a mishmash of unoriginal sci-fi themes haphazardly woven together with an incessant flow of unnecessary and poorly written content. Despite my best efforts, I just can't grasp why it was so highly regarded.

Annihilation is the first installment of a planned trilogy, yet it can easily be enjoyed as a standalone novel. It shares similarities with the works of J.G. Ballard, as it focuses not only on the mysterious environment the main character and her companions are exploring, but also delves into the psychological state of the protagonist. Jeff Vandermeer, being a proponent of weird fiction, infuses elements of Machen and Lovecraft into the story, resulting in a unique and original narrative. The book is beautifully written, with moments that can be described as hallucinogenic, and Vandermeer intentionally leaves some questions unanswered, allowing the reader's imagination to roam. While Carolyn McCormick's narration of the book may be somewhat lacking in variety, it still complements the novel, particularly during moments when a calm tone is required. Overall, I highly recommend Annihilation.

I kind of enjoyed the book. Personally, I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if I had actually read it instead of listening to it. The narrator didn't really bring anything to the story with her interpretation, but in fact, took away from it. I think I missed out on some important parts of the story because the narrator's monotone voice was easily forgettable and uninteresting. However, the last 45 minutes caught my attention and made me interested in continuing the series, especially since it involves a different character and therefore a different narrator. I've heard that the third book ties everything together, so I would recommend this book if you have the chance to sit down and read it. Otherwise, consider finding a different version with a different narrator.

Also if you still want recs, the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer is pretty wild. The first book is Annihilation, which they made a movie out of recently. If you saw it the movie and book are very different plot-wise but the foreboding weirdness and surreality is A+

I know it's a cliche thing to say but the book Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer is perfection. It's very short too. I'd recommend that quick read before checking out the film adaptation! The opening paragraphs of the book steal all your attention in life until it's over!

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is another good slow burn. Nothing much happens in the first chapter, but the descriptions are so evocative and the level of dread that suffuses the writing is almost unbearable. Just remember the 'tension on every page' rule.

Have been reading a lot of good feminist essays lately, including Dead Girls by Alice Bolin and Shrill by Lindy West. Just finished Bone by Jeff Smith, which is an epic but worth the time (hilarious and also I cried). Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is sPoOkY and great.

It's very very very loosely based on the book Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. I haven't read The Colour Out Of Space, but Annihilation (the book) only loosely shares a few ideas with the movie, so the copy-cattiness might be more Alex Garland's fault than Jeff VanderMeer's.

Jeff Vandermeer's sci-fi/New Weird book Annihilation is 1 of the best contemporary works of fiction I've read since Rachel Nagelberg's The Fifth Wall (2017). The film, however, is something altogether different & I could have lived w/o seeing it tbh.

Jeff Vandermeer's writing sometimes feels like an extended dream. Lots of loosely connected happenings that are never further explained. I loved the "alien" feeling of Annihilation, but the main character ended up basically wandering around and observing things.

If you’re into creepy sci-fi horror read Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy. It’s so good. Side note: Annihilation the movie was more inspired by the first book than based on, I’d say. Tonally they’re the same but the book is plenty different.

He knew I loved swimming and riding tyre inner tubes in the Barron Gorge. He told me that mountain range was the body of one of two brothers that had been killed there a long time ago. When I read Jeff VanderMeer’s ‘Annihilation’ 40yrs later, that story made a lot more sense.

I read Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer today and if you enjoyed the movie, I definitely recommend reading the novel as well. It is a different story, but still focuses on the unsettling horror of a force that cannot be comprehended and is not obviously evil or good- 1/2

ALSO If you like sci-fi the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer is phenomenal! It's what the new-ish movie Annihilation is based on. The 1st book is reallllly really captivating. The movie is great but doesn't really capture the same mind-**** feelings the book gives you.

Basically anything by Stephen King, long or short. He covers spooky stuff pretty well, and some of them touch on the human element of the story, like how people react to the situation. The Mist is a good example of that. Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer was also pretty unnerving.

Oh also! yesterday I read Jeff Vandermeer's _Borne_, didn't like it quite so much as Annihilation/the Southern Reach Trilogy, but it was enjoyable. Reminded me a bit of Brent Hayward's _The Fecund's Melancholy Daughter_ (Chizine, 2011).

Haven't seen Annihilation, but am going to guess it will not be able to do justice to the Jeff Vandermeer novel. The horrific yet beautiful entities inhabiting Area X that he describes in such virtuoso prose could never be adequately represented by CGI. imho.

I never get to read the novel, but from the Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer were totally mind-boggling. The adaptation alone were almost incomprehensible, a film dedicated for psychological sci-fi enthusiasts. An original Netflix film by Alex Garland. ?

Reading 2/3 of Jeff Vandermeer's Annihilation just before bed was probably not a good idea. The inexplicable drumming noise in the dark outside the window hasn't helped, either.

Although the characters in Annihilation are underdeveloped, Alex Garland brings the weird world of Jeff VanderMeer to life in a way seldomly seen on screen. Not on the big screen unfortunately, but not less mesmerizing on the small screen. Sci-fi imagery at its finest!

I read the book Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer which the film is based and while the film is good i was disappointed as there is so much in the book that has been left out.The book is hauntingly creepy,weird and terrifying and the film does not portray that.

I've just finished reading Jeff VanDermeer's Annihilation. To say that Alex Garland's AnnihilationMov is loosely inspired by it would be extremely generous. That's not to say I didn't enjoy them both, but the works are a world away from one another.

I'm highly recommending you Annihilation! I have read Jeff Vandermeer's Southern Reach trilogy (which I enjoyed) and I think Annihilation was great adaption. Annihilation is definitely one of the greatest sci-fi movie in years.

Annihilation is one eeire and weird journey, not quite on par with Arrival, but it has a twist finale. Im not sure this movie will survive through a trilogy tho just like its book author Jeff VanderMeer might wish it could be.

So I finished Annihilation the novel by Jeff VanderMeer and it's one of those "what does it all mean, you decide, I guess..?" type of deals without a classic ending. The book ends, but the story itself seems to boil and culminate until it gently evaporates into thin mist.
