Summary

Miles Ryan's life seemed to end the day his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident two years ago. Missy had been his first love, and Miles fervently believes she will be his last. As a deputy sheriff in the North Carolina town of New Bern, Miles Ryan not only grieves for Missy, but longs to bring the unknown driver to justice. Then Miles meets Sarah Andrews. The second grade teacher of his son Jonah, Sarah had left Baltimore after a difficult divorce to start over in the gentler surroundings of New Bern. Perhaps it is her own emotional wounds that make her sensitive to the hurt she first sees in Jonah's eyes, and then his father's. Tentatively, Sarah and Miles reach out to each other. Soon, they are both laughing for the first time in years...and falling in love.

  • You won't be able to tear yourself away from this book, as it captivates you with a rollercoaster of emotions including love, heartache, and ultimately joy! Personally, I adored this book. It's both heartbreaking and heartwarming.
  • I couldn't wait for another commute and then was sad when the half hour drive was over. It was a great mystery romance. Terrific narrative style. I wish I had gotten the unabridged version, only because this one ended too soon.
  • Another absolutely wonderful piece by Nicholas Sparks. His descriptive writing style draws the reader in and brings each character to life in such a way that it is almost impossible to put the book down. I cannot wait for the next book.
  • Did not care for the reader. Miles came across as an absolute jerk - not someone I would care about getting to know, much less form a relationship with. About half way through it was obvious what had happened and where the story was going, so my interest started to wander.
  • Like all of Nicholas Sparks books, this book didn't disappoint me. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever had to learn to trust again after having a broken heart. Thank you again Mr. Sparks for bring me a book that captures my heart.
