Summary

In an unforgettable new novel from award-winning authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, two teens-one black, one white-grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension.A bag of chips. That's all sixteen-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad's pleadings that he's stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad's resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad's every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered. But how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement? But there were witnesses: Quinn Collins-a varsity basketball player and Rashad's classmate who has been raised by Paul since his own father died in Afghanistan-and a video camera. Soon the beating is all over the news and Paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. Quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. But then Rashad is absent. And absent again. And again. And the basketball team-half of whom are Rashad's best friends-start to take sides. As does the school. And the town. Simmering tensions threaten to explode as Rashad and Quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before. Written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken from the headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

  • I definitely recommend this audiobook! The way it was narrated truly gave life to the story, capturing its intricate emotions. I'm a big fan of how the authors approached the subject matter, delving into the various perspectives and exploring the complexities. Well done!
  • I'm really into the fact that this book is narrated by two teenagers, with two different voices! They could have gone with just one narrator to save some cash, but having authentic voices for each character was definitely the right call (and something that was needed). Get ready to dive into the minds of these innocent adolescents and witness how fast things can spiral out of control when race comes into play. Our society seriously needs to confront the problems highlighted in this book.
  • Being a privileged white American, I never really gave much thought to any of this, just like Quinn. I never believed I was racist and always considered myself to be compassionate. But why did it matter so little to me? It simply never resonated with me personally. However, this book opened my eyes and made it hit closer to home. It made me realize that we need to care, we can't just ignore it, but we need to carry the burden and take action.
  • I really enjoyed the characters in 'All American Boys', as well as the various perspectives they brought to the story. It was interesting to see how some individuals were open to change, while others remained steadfast in their beliefs. The book portrayed a realistic depiction of this divide.
  • I'm teaching this book right now and it's not going so well. The students don't seem to be engaged, which means we're not having any meaningful discussions or conversations. It could be because I teach at a school where most of the students come from low-income backgrounds and are underrepresented minorities. Some of the students have even expressed that they don't feel the need to read about these experiences because they live them every day. I wish we could switch to a different book.
  • This book is absolutely amazing. The way it is written, the story itself, and the characters are all incredibly well-crafted. It kept me engaged from start to finish. The narrative is so impactful, and it's clear that the authors are incredibly talented in their storytelling abilities.
