Summary

From Annie Proulx-the Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning author of The Shipping News and Brokeback Mountain-comes her masterpiece, ten years in the writing: an epic, dazzling, violent, magnificently dramatic novel about taming the wilderness, set over two centuries. In the late eighteenth century Rene Sel, an illiterate woodsman, makes his way from Northern France to New France to seek a living. Bound to a feudal lord, a "seigneur," for three years in exchange for land, he suffers extraordinary hardship, always in awe of the forest he is charged with cleaning. Rene marries an Indian healer with children already, and they have more, mixing the blood of two cultures. Proulx tells the stories of the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of two lineages, the Sels and the Duquets, as well as the descendants of their allies and foes, as they travel back to Europe, to China, to New England, always in quest of a livelihood or fleeing stunningly brutal conditions-accidents, pestilence, Indian attacks, the revenge of rivals. Proulx's inimitable genius is her creation of characters who are so vivid-in their greed, lust, vengefulness, or their simple compassion and hope-that we follow them with fierce attention. Annie Proulx is one of the most formidable American writers of our time, and Barkskins is her Moby Dick.

  • This novel serves as a powerful reminder that the lands and trees belonging to the Indigenous Peoples of this continent were not conquered by mere "settlers," but rather by cunning "traders." This depiction is particularly relevant in today's context of ongoing debates surrounding global trade agreements. I found it to be a thought-provoking and eye-opening book.
  • This audiobook is a lengthy 26-hour exploration that delves deep into various topics. While the characters take a backseat in importance, it's not a big deal if you occasionally lose track of their family history. The characters themselves are not essential as they mainly serve as vessels for conveying the overall message. If you're looking for a more condensed version, it might be worth considering Cliff Notes instead.
  • This audiobook was an absolute rollercoaster ride of a family saga! It was performed with such expertise that I couldn't help but be amazed. The historical details were mind-blowing, the storylines and characters were complex and enthralling, and the writing was truly exceptional. I was hooked from start to finish, and even though it felt like I spent most of my winter listening to it, every minute was pure enjoyment. The only downside of experiencing this masterpiece through the audio format was not being able to easily refer back to the family genealogy to keep track of all the generations and family members. I believe it might have been possible to download it along with the book, but unfortunately, I missed out on that opportunity. Lesson learned for next time!
