Summary

Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover is the life memoir of Tara Westover. Westover was born in 1986. She was the youngest of her seven siblings and was born to a Mormon fundamentalist parents in Idaho. Her father Gene thought that the world was going to on the arrival of the millennium. The children were home-schooled by Gene as he was fanatically obsessed with protecting his family from the external brainwashing world.

However, shortly all the formal lessons and schooling stopped and Tara was left working in the family junkyard. They could only socialize with other families who had the same thought process as them, who were sure of a societal breakdown and were preparing for a government invasion anytime.

Tara’s mother works as an experienced but unlicensed midwife. She largely defers to her husband. Gene works in the junk and scrap metal but his earnings are not adequate to meet the family’s needs. The family members face many accidents and health hazards but the doctors and western medicines are forbidden by Gene so they suffer.

Gene is so stubborn that he does not take care of the safety of his family members in due to his idealistic and rudimentary thought process. Tara slowly comes out of this precarious setup and manages her way to the college. She also succeeds in doing a Ph.D. at Cambridge.

Review

Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover is an enriching read. The basic elements of the memoir are so fascinating that it would have made a scintillating book anyways. The narrative of the book is well-paced and reveals more about the author’s life as it moves forward. The experiences of growing up in a family where the head of the family is so stubborn and trivial for the safety and wellbeing of the family members has been captured beautifully.

The author also tries to emphasize that education does not merely mean learning about various subjects like history, science, and mathematics but is far more than that. The author takes the readers through her childhood with clarity and conciseness. She examines characters who have seriously failed and wronged her with compassion and love. This is an interesting memoir and a recommended read for getting a perspective into the author’s life and her incredible journey.
