Summary

That fool of a fairy Lucinda did not intend to lay a curse on me. She meant to bestow a gift. When I cried inconsolably through my first hour of life, my tears were her inspiration. Shaking her head sympathetically at Mother, the fairy touched my nose. "My gift is obedience. Ella will always be obedient. Now stop crying, child." I stopped.

  • This book is absolutely delightful. The idea behind it is pretty familiar at this point: what if you were enchanted to obey anyone's orders? I'm sure many of us have daydreamed about having that power at least once. Levine explores the implications of this within the context of the classic Cinderella story. There's a good amount of goofiness to keep young readers engaged. However, there are also subtle themes of profound seriousness and sadness, which adds another layer of appeal for older readers. It's impressive how the author portrays the unforeseen outcomes in such a compelling way within a fictional narrative.
  • I absolutely adored my first experience with this book, but the movie left me feeling let down. However, when I listened to the audiobook, it brought the story to life exactly as I had envisioned it in my mind while reading it to myself. It's definitely worth using a credit for!
  • I absolutely adore this tale! I first read it when I was a teenager and recently revisited it as an adult. However, the narrator in the audiobook version is not the best fit. Though she does a decent job reading, her voice sounds more like that of an 8 or 9-year-old rather than a 15-16-year-old, which feels quite peculiar when discussing themes of love and marriage. Additionally, there's this occasional harp playing in the background that can be slightly distracting.
  • The child who tells the story in this audiobook does a great job, especially in the early chapters when Ella is young. However, it becomes uncomfortable and even unsettling when a child continues to voice the later chapters. It diminishes the impact of the story. The book focuses on Ella's growth and development over many years, and it ends with her getting married. It feels strange to hear such a young voice trying to convey the more mature themes of the later chapters. Despite this, I still give the audiobook four stars and the story itself five stars because it is a beloved classic and my favorite childhood book. It's the book that sparked my love of reading. I want to emphasize that the narrator is talented! I just wish the voice would have matured as the story progressed. It would have been wonderful to have dual narration for different stages of Ella's life.
  • My niece, who's 38 years old, raved about "Ella Enchanted" as her all-time favorite book! Trusting her impeccable taste, I decided to purchase it from the service. Unfortunately, the narrator, Ella, had a grating and bothersome voice that made it difficult for me to fully engage with the story. I now regret not opting to read the book instead, and I might just do that in the future.
  • Since I was a kid, I've been a huge fan of this story, but I couldn't help but find the music to be a bit of a distraction and unnecessary. Moreover, the narrator's youthful voice didn't quite fit the story. It's supposed to be a young woman reflecting on her own love story, and that sentiment doesn't really shine through with such a youthful voice.
  • Our 12-year-old daughter used to despise the moment we reminded her about her reading assignments. Due to her language arts learning disabilities, it takes her a considerable amount of time to comprehend the words she reads, making it difficult for her to retain information. Sometimes, she would even doze off before dinner while struggling to read. However, everything has changed now. She eagerly looks forward to curling up with her book and iPod, as she can now both read and listen to the stories simultaneously. She is absolutely captivated by "Ella Enchanted" and finds it incredibly touching. According to her, it feels like she is right there in the story. It's such a delightful experience for her. We will definitely provide more updates once she finishes the book.
