It is 1925, and Richard Diver is the high priest of the good life on the white sands of the French Riviera. The Beautiful People - film stars, socialites, aristocrats - gather eagerly and bitchily around him and his wife Nicole. Beneath the breathtaking glamour, however, is a world of pain, and there is at the core of their lives a brittle hollowness. Beautiful, powerful and tragic, Tender is the Night is one of the great works of American fiction.

  • I read The Great Gatsby a while back and enjoyed it, so I decided to give Tender Is the Night a shot. Within a couple of hours, it started to really annoy me and I had to stop. The story line was terrible, the situations were absurd with one-dimensional characters, and there was a continuous flow of 'truths' that felt like arrogant generalizations. The narration didn't help either - the exaggerated inflections constantly reminded me of the reader.
  • This audiobook is fantastic! It tells a captivating story written by one of the most talented American authors of the 20th century. It's a bit lengthy, but I managed to speed it up to 1.25x. Therese Plummer, one of my preferred narrators, did an outstanding job narrating the story.
