  • I absolutely loved this book! Being born in Hamburg, Germany in 1941 to a Jewish mother, I found the story so relatable and it felt like it could have really happened. I actually have a physical copy of the book in my personal library, but I decided to listen to it on the service instead. Thank you so much!
  • The German Girl: A Novel is a stunningly crafted narrative, intricately exploring the depths of love and grief over multiple generations. It's mind-boggling to fathom that this poignant tale is inspired by real-life events.
  • I had a hard time completing this book due to its abundance of negative undertones. While I understand that the time period depicted in the story was filled with immense hardships, I believe that in life, there are still moments of positivity if one is willing to acknowledge them.
  • I was really looking forward to reading this book, but unfortunately, it turned out to be quite dull, heartbreaking, and gloomy. Moreover, the narration lacked depth and excitement. Despite my initial excitement, I managed to finish it, although I found none of the characters to be compelling. The portrayal of Anna and Hannah's mothers as constantly emotionally overwhelmed and sorrowful was quite frustrating. It made me wonder how they managed to navigate through life. I was really hoping for characters that would captivate my interest.
  • The ending struck me as peculiar... without giving too much away - I just don't feel like it matched up. There were some intriguing glimpses into the voyage to Cuba - so all in all, not too shabby. It could have used a little more clarification on certain characters and some of them weren't fully fleshed out.
  • This audiobook offers a captivating glimpse into history, providing valuable perspective and insight into significant events. However, it falls short in fully exploring the depths of certain crucial characters.
  • The German Girl: A Novel is a deeply emotional and inspiring narrative. It manages to evoke both feelings of sadness and hope simultaneously. Through its compelling storyline, the book offers us a poignant glimpse into the struggles faced by those uprooted from their homes and thrust into unfamiliar cultures during World War II, only to be returned to an oppressive society. One aspect that I particularly appreciated was the inclusion of the St Louis, a historical event that has often been overlooked but holds great significance even in contemporary times.
