  • This audiobook tells a heartbreaking tale of the hardships faced by those who are most vulnerable. It emphasizes the importance of resilience and love in the face of adversity.
  • This true story is absolutely incredible! It deals with some difficult topics, but it's so captivating and intriguing. It provides a unique perspective on polygamy and showcases the incredible resilience and determination of the human spirit to protect and support loved ones. It's truly mind-blowing! The author is a genuine survivor, displaying immense strength. She should feel an immense sense of pride for enduring and going to great lengths to save and care for her family.
  • This book was absolutely amazing! It was as if the events took place in the 1880s rather than the 1990s. I was completely unaware of the realities of polygamy and the expectations placed on the wives and children involved. Ruth, her mother, and her siblings went through unimaginable hardships, constantly moving between Texas and Mexico. It's hard to feel any sympathy towards the polygamist men or their church. I'm so glad I decided to listen to this book; I enjoy mixing non-fiction in with my usual mystery novels, and this was a fantastic choice! And Ruth, you go girl! You truly deserve all the good things that come your way.
  • Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. It was incredibly disturbing, but I was compelled to find out how it all unfolded. The resilience of the young woman in this memoir is truly remarkable. Despite enduring unimaginable circumstances, she emerged as a survivor and an extraordinary individual. It's heartbreaking to see how she was deprived of a normal childhood. That's my primary qualm with this story. However, as the narrative progressed, the situation only worsened until, at the age of 19, she took control of her own life. Throughout the book, it became evident that she was the only one who acted like an adult, apart from her grandmother who had no authority due to Ruth's oppressive mother and stepfather. I won't give away any more details, but this story will stay with me forever. I owe my daughter-in-law for recommending this book to me. I'm grateful she did. I appreciate everything about Ruth, including her authentic narration. It made the story feel even more genuine. Moreover, I believe she's a talented writer. If she ever publishes a sequel, I would be thrilled. I also grew fond of her siblings. Without a doubt, this book deserves 5 stars!
  • This memoir is absolutely gripping! The author takes us on a captivating journey, sharing her own life experiences growing up in a polygamist community. From a young age, she faced unimaginable hardships, losing her father at just three years old and being subjected to an abusive and neglectful stepfather. Ruth's childhood was consumed with household responsibilities, taking care of her younger siblings, and trying to support her emotionally wounded mother. However, amidst the darkness, there were moments of hope as Ruth managed to find ways to escape her circumstances, raise her sisters, and even pursue her education. The only regret I have is that she didn't break free sooner and take legal action against her abuser.
  • As I delved into this book, it struck me that I was not immersing myself in a work of fiction, complete with an imaginary plot and a triumphant protagonist. Instead, I realized that the sinister characters within these pages could very well exist in the real world, evading capture by any heroic figure. It's a heart-wrenching narrative that reflects the harsh reality experienced by countless individuals. I found myself yearning to leap into the story, rescue the vulnerable, confront those despicable monsters, and ensure they faced the consequences of their actions. The writing is exceptional, and I would eagerly devour a sequel to continue this captivating journey.
