Summary

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Audiobook by Eric Carle is a classic baby board book. The Very Hungry Caterpillar starts with a small white egg resting on a leaf in the moonlight. When the sun comes up the next day- a Sunday, the white little egg hatches and a tiny caterpillar who is very hungry comes out. The hungry caterpillar obviously goes out the entire of the next week in search for food. It eats fruits and all other foods which a caterpillar may like.

He eats various kinds of fruits like apples, peaches, and plums till Thursday. It eats five oranges on Friday and even after that, it is very hungry. On Saturday, the very hungry caterpillar decides to eat holes into human foods. So he ends up eating foods like chocolate cakes, cupcakes, pickles, ice cream cones etc. After eating so much it feels stomachache so it only eats a cleansing leaf on the Sunday which makes it feel much better.

The hungry caterpillar is no more hungry now after feasting on different food items in the previous week. It now builds a cocoon around itself. After several weeks of remaining inside the cocoon, the caterpillar again comes out but this time as a beautiful butterfly.

Review

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Audiobook by Eric Carle is a classic storybook, the ideal first book for babies and toddlers. The book is hugely popular and has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide. The illustrations are bold and vivid in rich colors and are depicted on a white background, which enhances the visual appeal of the book even more.

The collage elements are made up of coarse hand-painted paper that is cut or torn to assume the shape. In addition to the collage, the author has also cleverly used colored pencil to highlight some additional features like the hair on the caterpillar’s back. The bright visual appeal and the textured patterns of shapes provide an unmatched learning experience for children and makes them want to touch the features. The caterpillar becoming a butterfly has been beautifully shown. The vivid butterfly spans two pages and is represented in different colors. This is a must-read book for all children.
