Summary

C. S. Lewis reworks the timeless myth of Cupid and Psyche into an enduring piece of contemporary fiction in this novel about the struggle between sacred and profane love. Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

  • Just like always, when CS Lewis starts writing, it's like an enchanting melody for my ears. It's not just about reading an amazing story, it feels more like embarking on an incredible adventure that brings together both your emotions and thoughts.
  • As with numerous audiobook adaptations of timeless tales, it appears that this particular rendition was initially distributed on cassettes or CDs. Consequently, certain sentences are duplicated at the juncture where one tape or disc concludes and the other commences. This practice may have been logical during that era, given that switching from one cassette or CD to another already disrupted the story's flow, and the end of each tape or disc served as a convenient stopping point. However, in today's age, the repetition is rather abrupt and indicates a disregard for product excellence and customer satisfaction.
  • This underrated novel explores a narrative similar to the author's famous space trilogy, but set in a more traditional earthly environment. With influences from Greek mythology and European monarchies, it presents a captivating tale that spans across generations, offering profound insights and contemplations unique to that particular viewpoint.
  • You absolutely have to check out 'Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold'. It is hands down the most incredible book ever written about love. Seriously, don't waste any time, read it immediately!
  • This audiobook has several repetitive sections, giving the impression that the editing was poorly executed. It can be quite bothersome and greatly affects the overall listening experience.
  • I absolutely loved this story! It was written really well, and even though I'm not always a fan of first person narratives, I felt like it really enhanced the overall experience. Ms. May's narration was also a highlight for me. I've listened to Pride and Prejudice books on a free podcast, I think it was Libravox Recordings, where they had different narrators for each chapter. Some were amazing, but others had these nasal or shrill voices that made it hard to focus on the story. That wasn't the case here though. I hardly even noticed Ms. May's narration, except when the text mentioned Orual's voice and I found myself comparing it in my head. It was great to have the same narrator throughout, it made the chapters just fly by. I highly recommend giving this audiobook a shot!
