  • I learned from the second section of this book that the author emphasizes the importance of getting a full 8 hours of sleep each night. They claim that any health issues or ailments experienced by humans can be attributed to even a slight lack of sleep. According to the author, missing just one night of sleep can lead to spontaneous combustion and even the development of tumors. I find it confusing as my diet book blames food for all illnesses, my exercise book blames a sedentary lifestyle, my neighbor blames contrails from the U.S. air-force, a witch doctor blames bad jube-jube, and my Yogi blames bad Karma from a childhood incident. Now, Dr. Walker claims that all illnesses are caused by staying up past your bedtime. What's worse is that I engage in all these activities and yet I am not even sick! This book contains numerous instances of what I would consider "questionable scientific claims." For example, the author references a 1992 study that supposedly shows a significant correlation between sleep deprivation and flatulence. However, the author fails to provide the specifics, such as the exact percentage or the number of studies involved. In my own research, I have found no direct correlation between this book and credible information. The book makes statements like "people who take sleeping pills often die before the general population," but conveniently overlooks the fact that sedatives are frequently prescribed to individuals who are already terminally ill. Dr. Walker reminds me of those academics who rely on grants and avoid conducting real scientific research. His ultimate advice on sleep can be summarized in the last chapter: avoid drinking coffee at night, maintain a consistent bedtime, and sleep in a cool, distraction-free environment. Well, my mom knew that back in 1942! Now I am so fearful of the consequences of not sleeping that I stay awake all night. I urge others to avoid this book and not subject themselves to eternal damnation.

Well, let's be real here, there are plenty of reasons why we need to wake up, such as satisfying our basic needs like food, water, and sex. Despite this minor quibble, I loved the book overall and believe it's definitely worth using your credit on.
