  • I'm not sure if I can finish it. There's just too much focus on Adam and his wife Kelly's religious activities like teaching Sunday School, attending church, and reading the Bible. It gets a bit overwhelming. And then there are these crazy reckless stunts that Adam pulls off, like jumping off a moving truck over a bridge into a river, or sitting on a fire ant bed for a bet. It's hard to believe that he did these things as a grown man in the SEALs, and even harder to believe that his buddies and officers encouraged him. This part of the book was the most difficult to listen to. I think people who are "fearless" can actually be dangerous, not just to themselves but also to others. Real courage is feeling afraid but still going ahead and doing it anyway. It's also mind-boggling that Adam managed to join the military despite being a hardcore drug addict, and even more mind-boggling that he kept relapsing while in the SEALs, with some of his comrades knowing but covering for him. It reminds me of those stories you hear in Southern Baptist churches about sinners who turn their lives around after finding Jesus (I know this because I grew up in that environment). Another part of the book that's hard to get through is the amateurish writing. The author switches back and forth between Adam's dangerous training and his wife's struggles with their infant son, giving both equal weight. In a book like "Outpost" that portrays the harrowing experiences of US soldiers in Afghanistan, it's poignant to see how the wives and families back home suffer and wait for news of their loved ones' safety. The narrator's attempts at accents for Adam, his wife, and parents are honestly laughable. It's like a bad actor trying to imitate what they think Scarlett O'Hara sounded like. As someone from Arkansas, particularly Hot Springs, I can tell you that we definitely don't sound like people from Mississippi. However, I did find some enjoyment in the descriptions of life in the SEALs after completing BUDS training and before earning their trident. The next stage when they first join the teams sounds just as brutal as BUDS. Why there isn't a voice actor
