Summary

What does it mean when a fictional hero takes a journey?. Shares a meal? Gets drenched in a sudden rain shower? Often, there is much more going on in a novel or poem than is readily visible on the surface-a symbol, maybe, that remains elusive, or an unexpected twist on a character-and there's that sneaking suspicion that the deeper meaning of a literary text keeps escaping you.

  • If you're the kind of person who's into diving deep into literature analysis and enjoys audiobooks, then this is the one for you. Although it's worth noting that this audiobook doesn't have all the chapters that are in the physical copy of the revised edition I own, it does come with some extra content. Overall, it's an enjoyable listen.
  • I was hoping for a book that would delve more into uncovering insightful themes in stories, rather than just offering a bunch of examples. Additionally, it felt like a large portion of the book was geared towards writers rather than readers. Maybe I misunderstood what the book was about. In any case, it didn't prove to be as beneficial to me as a reader as I had anticipated.
  • I was required to read this book for my studies, and usually the books teachers assign aren't that great, but I surprisingly found myself enjoying this one. It wasn't a quick read, and there were moments where I felt a bit stuck, but it was brimming with amusing stories about how we, as readers, can gain from altering our approach to reading. Not too shabby.
