Summary

Dorothea Brooke is a thoughtful and idealistic young woman determined to make a difference with her life. Enamored of a man whom she believes is setting this example, she unwittingly traps herself into a loveless marriage. Her parallel is Tertius Lydgate, a visionary young doctor from the city, whose passionate ambition to spread the new science of medicine to the village is complicated by his love for the wrong woman.

  • To be honest, I hate using clichés, but I can't deny that this book had a profound impact on me. It completely transformed me as a person, prompting me to deeply reflect on my wants, drive, successes, connections, choices, and aspirations. And let me tell you, the voice actor who narrated the audiobook? Absolutely top-notch.
  • I never thought I'd pick up this book, but boy am I glad I did! After finishing it, I can confidently say that I have zero regrets. And let me tell you, the person who narrated this audiobook? Freakin' amazing.
  • If you love English novels, this is a must! We learn about ourselves through George Eliot's characters. Are we more like the kind, compassionate Dorthea or self-centered Rosamond? We see how other lives are affected through the actions of these characters and can reflect on our own behavior. A great story about believing in someone when all others do not. Amazing narration!!
  • I have laughed, cried, and smiled so many times as I listened to this wonderful narration of a novel I know well but hadn't read for many years. I didn't want it to end. So real was the characterization created by Nadia May. A magical experience, to disappear back into the gentle but searing language of Victorian satire, the playful moralizing that Thackeray and Eliot mastered so effortlessly. There is more truth, more deep understanding of flawed, but occasionally, brave humanity between the pages of Middlemarch than in a lifetime of offerings on Facebook or Twitter. Thank you so much Nadia May for 32 hours of pure joy.
