Summary

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. A ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness"-the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.

  • I really enjoyed the practical guidance in this book on how to cultivate inner peace and bring more harmony into our daily lives. It offers tangible steps that can help us create a more peaceful world, starting with embracing a peaceful mindset.
  • It all makes perfect sense. Just take a breath, pause, reflect, detach, assess, and then take action. But having these principles reiterated helps to bring a sense of calm. Maybe it's because I listened to it in the sauna that I am left with such a peaceful message. ??? Picture this: the youngest Buddhist monk standing in line at the mall, waiting to see Santa. His older brothers, dressed in saffron robes, patiently waiting their turn. In his hand, he holds his wish list. When he finally sits on Santa's lap, he hands him a blank piece of paper. "This paper is empty," remarked Santa. "Indeed, Santa. It symbolizes my desire for freedom, which will guide me towards enlightenment," replied the little monk. "So there's nothing specific I want for Christmas." Upon hearing this, Santa couldn't help but shed a few tears. He released the little saint from his embrace and assured him that he would do everything possible to grant his wish. The key to true happiness lies not in fulfilling desires, but in freeing oneself from them.
  • If people just flashed a grin more often, the globe would definitely be sitting pretty. Folks would be less furious, and all the violent vibes would take a backseat. This book is all about seeking serenity, and the best part is, you don't have to go to extraordinary lengths to achieve it. Simply embracing a more joyful mindset and treating others with kindness can truly work wonders.
