Summary

Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

  • I had a hard time getting through the first half of the book before finally giving up. I did have some interest in the characters, especially the elderly rabbi, but overall, the story felt slow and aimless. It was difficult to maintain my interest. On a positive note, I did enjoy the narrator, as I had heard his voice before.
  • I absolutely loved this book! It was the perfect choice for a laid-back listen during a busy holiday season. However, even with George Guidall's amazing performance, I felt that the storyline was a bit on the simplistic side. I mean, it lacked that edge and thrill that keeps you on your toes. There weren't any unexpected twists and turns, and the ending was pretty predictable. Nevertheless, I still highly recommend the book. I found the plot and characters to be enjoyable, and sometimes it's nice to indulge in a straightforward tale.
