Upon perusing the reviews, it becomes evident that this book may not appeal to everyone. However, for me, it was a captivating and unforgettable listen. Several years ago, I embarked on a bird and whale watching expedition near the Farallon Islands, and its stark yet breathtaking beauty has remained etched in my memory. Additionally, I have visited the Marine Mammal Center in Marin County on numerous occasions. This facility is dedicated to rescuing injured or abandoned seals, sea lions, and other marine creatures, rehabilitating them, and releasing them back into the ocean. Given my affinity for nature and the abundant descriptions of the Farallons' wildlife found within this book, it greatly appealed to me. Yet, if you do not share a similar inclination, you may not derive the same enjoyment from it. Nevertheless, it was the story itself that truly captivated me and refused to let go. However, even this aspect may not resonate with everyone. The narrative is presented from a first-person perspective, with the main character, Melissa/Miranda, exhibiting a highly introspective nature. She is not a particularly warm or endearing individual, lacking in close friendships and romantic relationships. Consequently, it may prove challenging for readers/listeners to connect with or like her. Nonetheless, I believe she possesses a deep understanding of herself and undergoes significant personal growth throughout the course of the narrative. I personally found the story engrossing, occasionally even shocking, and I devoured it in record time. Now that I have finished it, I find myself wishing for more. I am reluctant to leave the stark, forbidding, yet beautiful islands behind, and I yearn to know how Miranda's future unfolds. When it came to rating this audiobook, I found myself torn between a 4 and a 5. I cannot pinpoint any specific complaints; rather, I simply relished this particular journey back to the Farallons! Hence, I have settled on a full 5-star rating. The story remains vivid and prominent in my mind. Usually, I do not listen to audiobooks in my car; instead, I prefer using an mp3 player and earbuds. Consequently, I encountered no difficulties or grievances with the narrator, Ms. Sands. I believe she did a marvelous job of truly embodying the protagonist. I could hear her perfectly well. Admittedly, the experience might have been different in the presence of road noise, but that is not how I typically listen. All things considered, this audiobook ranks among my most cherished and memorable experiences.

A somewhat dark novel about a nature photographer and a group of biologists on the isolated Farallon Islands. Their interactions and their quirky natures and the description of the natural life on the islands were both interesting but a bit tiresome. The story evolves and it keeps you interest. the ending is a bit of a surprise.
