Summary

Blockbuster #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner returns with an irresistible story about a young woman trying to make it in Hollywood...At twenty-three, Ruth Saunders headed west with her seventy-year-old grandma in tow, hoping to be hired as a television writer. Four years later, she's hit the jackpot when she gets The Call: the sitcom she wrote, The Next Big Thing, has gotten the green light, and Ruthie's going to be the show-runner. But her dreams of Hollywood happiness are threatened by demanding actors, number-crunching executives, an unrequited crush on a boss, and her grandmother's impending nuptials.      Set against the fascinating backdrop of Los Angeles show business culture, with an insider's ear and eye for writer's rooms, bad behavior backstage and set politics, Jennifer Weiner's new novel is a rollicking ride on the Hollywood rollercoaster and a heartfelt story about what it's like for a young woman to love, and lose, in the land where dreams come true.

  • I read Good in Bed a while ago and when I found out that Jennifer Weiner had a new book coming out, I made the decision to buy it. And boy, am I glad I did! I absolutely adored this book! The narration was amazing, the story had a great pace, and the characters were just fantastic. Ruthie, her boyfriend Dave, and the grandma were all such wonderfully written characters. I was genuinely saddened when I reached the end because I really wanted more. I'm definitely going to get another book by Jennifer Weiner, and I really hope it's just as fantastic as The Next Best Thing. I cannot recommend this book enough.
  • I absolutely adored the contemporary humor in this book. The characters and the plot were so captivating. It really connected with me on a personal level as a writer, helping me stay in touch with my own reality.
  • I absolutely loved this book, it was absolutely fantastic and left me craving for more. It would be great if Jennifer Weiner could whip up a little sequel with Ruth and Dave's wedding. Lots of love!
  • I gotta say, 'The Next Best Thing: A Novel' is definitely up there on my list of all-time favorite audiobooks. The protagonist is just so darn likable and easy to connect with. It's the kind of story that's a breeze to listen to, but still has a lot of depth. Trust me, you won't be disappointed if you give this one a go.
  • The narrator of this audiobook is absolutely amazing! She brings Ruthie to life in such a lovable and sympathetic way. I can't help but think that in the hands of a less talented narrator, Ruthie could have been quite insufferable. Great job!
  • I'm totally into this book! It was full of unexpected twists, hilarious moments, deep emotional connections, and heart-wrenching truths. I can't stress enough how much I think everyone should check it out!
  • I might have enjoyed this book, considering I generally enjoy Jennifer Weiner's work. However, both the main character and the narrator were quite irritating in my opinion. The self-pity was just too much to handle. I do understand that a person who has been injured and scarred in their childhood deserves sympathy, but once they become an adult and achieve their dream job, I expected them to have a more positive outlook. It seems like a missed opportunity for a different kind of story. Now I regret not opting for that alternative.
