Summary

In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from "the good fight," For Whom the Bell Tolls. The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan's love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo's last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving and wise. "If the function of a writer is to reveal reality," Maxwell Perkins wrote to Hemingway after reading the manuscript, "no one ever so completely performed it." Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author's previous works, it stands as one of the best war novels of all time.

  • I happened to have bought this book on the same day my wife downloaded it. I have gone through it both by reading and listening (not simultaneously, of course!). Honestly, the narration of this book is downright dull. Especially during the conversations between the main character and his love interest, the narration becomes incredibly annoying, making the listener wish they would just stop talking and go to sleep. This issue doesn't arise when reading the book, which is a much more pleasant experience overall.
  • I thought I'd give this one a shot since I wanted to catch up on some of the timeless classics I've overlooked. Let me just say, it's an absolute masterpiece! I can't believe what I've been missing out on. I'm diving into all of the author's other works now because I just can't get enough. This guy is a genius. The story feels so real, with rich details that keep you engaged without ever becoming dull. It's both tender and brutally honest in depicting the inhumanity of man, yet it never crosses the line into being unnecessarily graphic. Trust me, buy it and you won't be able to put it down. The narrator is absolutely fantastic, bringing the story to life as if he's read it countless times and has a deep love for it. That alone deserves a five-star rating.
