Summary

Although his career as a bestselling author and on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart was founded on fake news and invented facts, in 2016 that routine didn't seem as funny to John Hodgman anymore. Everyone is doing it now.

  • If you're into hearing stories from a snowflake liberal discussing their personal experiences, then this book might be up your alley. And if you happen to be a conservative interested in exploring the mindset of liberals, this book could be a good resource for you. However, if you lean more towards the right, you might find that while there are some humorous moments, the majority of the book might not grab your attention.
  • Is the author some kind of celebrity? I don't really know. He goes on and on about his facial hair and his loved ones. It's not amusing, not captivating, and there aren't any significant takeaways. Save yourself the trouble and skip this one.
  • If you're a fan of Massachusetts or Maine, or even if you're not from there, and you're also navigating your way through middle age like me, then you absolutely need to check out John Hodgman's book, VACATIONLAND. From his early days in Brookline to his current life in downeast Maine, every moment he shares is not just a part of his own story, but also a part of ours. Reading this book feels like you're delving into a piece of your own soul that's been extracted and put on display for you to learn from. It's funny, but with a touch of sadness that only brings a small smile to your face. It can be a bit painful at times, but it's the kind of bittersweet ache that comes with the realization that your youth is fading, yet holds the promise of something better in the years to come. This book is simply fantastic and stands out as John Hodgman's best work for all to enjoy. It's really worth your time.
  • The only memoir I've ever not hated, Vacationland is consistently funny enough that it justifies the only book review I've ever written. If Hodgman was an actual-famous real celebrity, and not simply a book-famous fake judge, this would be a bestseller. His narration is the best. I will be genuinely disappointed if this is the last mostly true nonfiction book he puts out. Go ahead and read it, dummy.
