Review

After reading the summary, one may think that A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles audiobook is not going to be a life-changing story, but nothing could be further from the truth. The story of Count Rostov is captivating, remarkable and unforgettable.

After being sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol Hotel, the life of Count Alexander Ilyich takes an unexpected turn. We witness how he goes from a luxurious life to a more modest one in an attic within the hotel.

When we think of the aristocracy, we usually imagine narcissist, superficial and selfish people who are used to have everything they want whenever they want it. However, Rostov is a fascinating character with a lot of potential that has a lot to offer. Opposite from the communists in the Russian government, who make quick and unfair judgments, Rostov appreciates what every person has to offer, and prefers to trust too much than making a wrong judgment. Additionally, Rostov knows how to value the little things of life and he notices every single detail of the things happening around him.

For the reader, the hotel is a little city, with people coming and leaving, with restaurants, clothing stores and a barbershop, and with some characters that decide to stay for long periods of time there.

The style us Towles is marvelous. Descriptions make you feel like you are in the hotel, seeing the people, listening to their conversations, tasting all the flavors of the food and the bitterness of coffee. Characters are well developed and the relationships between them are natural and credible.

A Gentleman in Moscow audiobook is a great story recommended to all of those who value simple stories with outstanding characters and brilliant narratives. Meeting Rostov and his way of thinking will leave a mark in any person that is willing to get to know him.
