Summary

From farmer Joel Salatin's point of view, life in the 21st century just ain't normal. In FOLKS, THIS AIN'T NORMAL, he discusses how far removed we are from the simple, sustainable joy that comes from living close to the land and the people we love. Salatin has many thoughts on what normal is and shares practical and philosophical ideas for changing our lives in small ways that have big impact.

  • When I purchased this book, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The image of the chicken on the cover caught my attention, and I was immediately drawn in by the author's heartfelt connection to the land and his critique of large-scale commercial farming. However, as I delved deeper into the book, I found myself increasingly confronted with more and more outlandish claims, strawman arguments, and conspiracy theories. The author lost me completely when he started promoting anti-vaccine sentiments, advocating for chiropractic and homeopathic remedies as alternatives to conventional healthcare. His paranoia became evident when he referred to Department of Agriculture employees as the "food police" and argued against taxation and lawsuits. It's truly disappointing to see a book that had the potential to shed light on the inhumane and unhealthy practices of agri-business and major food processors instead turn into a platform for the author's self-congratulatory and smug ideas, tinged with a hint of pathology.
