  • I've always had a hankering to dive into this modern classic. The raw and simple language used in the book has a haunting quality that I find captivating. There are those who have found fault with the book, claiming it's too straightforward. However, I view this as Hemingway's way of setting the tone for the whole story. Some folks have even speculated that the sharks Santiago encounters represent Hemingway's own struggle with literary critics. Who can really say? Either way, I was thrilled with my purchase because Donald Sutherland did a fantastic job as the narrator.
  • This audiobook is a flawless blend of narrative and performance. The prose is refreshingly uncomplicated, with succinct sentences that demand to be read by a skilled actor. Donald Sutherland expertly narrates the story without rushing, captivating the listener at every moment, which is quite ironic given the slow passage of time in the plot. Listening to this audiobook made me feel like I was in the presence of two masters - the talented writer and the brilliant narrator. The only instances that momentarily snapped me back to reality were the few noticeable volume changes resulting from edits. When the audiobook concluded, I found myself teary-eyed, reluctant to part ways with the raw and tender beauty of the fictional world.
